Buying new vs used price

Hypothetical question...

Let's say an AD or Trusted seller is selling a BNIB, never worn watch (for sake of argument doesn't matter the model) for $7000, with your name on the warranty card.

You find a couple of the same models, from either an AD, TS or private party that are a few months old, excellent condition, but used for less.

How much less would it have to be before you just decide to buy new with full warranty? I'm not talking a hard to find model.

$200, $500, $1,000, $1,500?

500 or less. Are you factoring tax as well? That makes a big difference of 400 bucks or so.

Used is used. In your example, I would buy new unless there was a $1,000 plus discount.

I always consider the service cost (and trouble) if I think about a used piece no matter how good it looks, and for that reason I prefer to buy new.

It all depends on the watch. For $1500, I'd be hard pressed not to just go new.

$1,000 or more. Or its not worth it to me. Why some sellers on here try to sell a used watch for less than $500 difference over brand new with my name on card is crazy. I will buy new all day long if thats all I would save.

Thanks for the replies.

At least $1,000 is what I'm thinking too. Less than that and I would rather buy new with no worries, excuses, and full warranty.

I just made this exact decision a week or so ago. In my case it was almost exactly $1000 difference between best priced LNIB and new from AD with my name on papers. I chose new, it was a no brainer.

It's situational and depends on the service cost.

In this case I'd say at least 20%, so 1,400 or more in order to buy from TS, even if it is a hard to get watch.

Buying used is a good way to start a hobby. As you are trying to figure out what you really want, you will likely flip a few pieces before settling down on your keepers. Of course, be mindful who you buy from.

$1k or less from an AD

$500 or less from a Grey Seller

Other than that I'm totally ok with used for the price.

Depends on the model, but I recently went used on a 114060 and saved $1000 over BNIB from trusted seller and much more over AD price. Not concerned about service as the watch is basically new and runs great. Had a couple scuffs on the bracelet which I fixed and it is my beater anyways.

On this watch the risk of buying used was worth the savings.

well, a TS or grey would get the watch for min 20% off MSRP, so i would say an additional 5 - 10% off from the original out the door price they paid is a good enough reason to go used; plus you're likely saving some tax too.

Depends. For example there are several "new" Daytonas out there that are new old stock due to the release of the ceramic bezel. The price on used Daytonas has felt that for sure. I think it depends on how much you are going to wear vs collect. If it is a daily wear, a used option is the way I go... my 2 cents.
