And the GMT crashes to the floor!

So anyway, GMT met the tile floor...Bad but not the end of the world. I have insurance so it's covered. Obviously full service, crystal, crown and stem are damaged as well. No big deal. My question is this...the dial and hands have damage from the crystal pieces (micro abrasions) I plan on keeping the watch for my lifetime. New dial and hands aren't a big deal to me BUT if I ever were to trade would the damage to them or them being replacements hurt the value more? I suppose it could go either way. Suggestions/opinions are welcome!

I have no idea, but if it were mine, I would fix or replace whatever's damaged.

Good luck,

Good luck,
Wise man.

This is not a vintage watch in the sense of an old, patina dial.
Dials don't have serial numbers.
Change it.

I'm not an expert in this area but I would guess that replacing the dial and hands would hurt the value more... I'm sure someone with more knowledge will chime in

Ouch! Is it a luminova dial? If it is, and it were insured, I would get new dial and hands...

Bad luck.

I just had a new dial and hand set replaced on a 2003 GMT same as this for the same reasons. Shattered crystal parts were swept round the dial by the second hand before the watch was stopped leaving circular swirl marks on the face of the dial. They were only visible when the light caught it at just the right angle.
Non the less I had the dial and hands replaced. On this watch I very much doubt it will effect the value because it's impossible to tell it's been replaced at all. However, leaving an obviously scratched dial in there would have done, so swapped out it was.
Looks like the day it was new .....

A replacement dial and hands isn't going to hurt the value on a modern GMT there are hundreds of thousands of them out there.

It's a luminova dial and hands so just replace. You may even get a new stick dial, which some prefer.

wow, too bad.

but since its insured, just send it to rsc and sit back while they do whatever is required to the watch (dial, hands and whatever at this point).

side bar, if its a lifetime watch, the value after the service or due to the crack seems immaterial -- assuming you'll be fertilizer when someone finds out the value, that is.

looking forward to the after pix.

Not vintage, but still discontinued.
I'd keep it as original as possible. Glad you're keeping a level head

Replies so far are right in line with what I was thinking. I'll have them replace it all. I'll just hope they don't ruin my lugs (but maybe that's just internet lore)

Thanks everyone for the input!

I would replaced what needs replaced!

I am just curious how it is insured? I of course have all mine insured against theft and loss but how to insure against damage?

Floater or JM covers all risk.

I have a Personal Articles Policy through State Farm. Covered agains loss or damage. I'm sure it very similar to Jewlers Mutual as well.

GAH!! That picture is going to haunt my dreams. I've had my Pepsi for less than a week, having waited almost 30 years to finally get one. Mine is circa 2000 so if it was me in that situation I would simply replace everything that was damaged. I'm not a collector so the value of original vs replacement means nothing to me. I'm just weird like that I guess. I plan to have this Pepsi forever, or until I give it to my son. Or daughter.

We have very similar stories! Mine is a 2001, waited (put other things first) for 20+ years. I love my GMT but at the end of the day it's just a watch. I will give it to one of my daughters one day. I'm also not really a collector so ROI isn't a big deal to me.

IMO, Since you plan to keep it, I would have it brought back to new condition replacing parts as needed.

Sad to see; get it fixed and don't worry about the new parts needed reducing the value. As observed it's a modern Rolex.

Interesting! I am not trying to derail the thread but is there a deductible to such a policy?

I will get it changed. It's lumivona dial anyway. All the best with the repairs...
