first rolex for wife

Getting my wife a surprise present to celebrate getting her dream job.

I want to get her something timeless - something that, in 20 years, will still be a prominent feature of her collection.

If I was getting one for a man it would be easy - a sub date/no date, but even though she's worn my sub and likes it, its way too big for her skinny wrists.

Any suggestions on a timeless classic ladies piece?

If she likes to sometimes wear your sub this means that she likes watches that do have a wrist presence so my opinion would be for you to try and search something in the 36/37 mm range. Depending on the budget you can start from a DJ, through YM SS, YM Oysterflex Everose all the way to a DD. So, plenty to choose from.

Bought this for my wife's 30th earlier this week. DJ31 MOP.

Can't wait to give it to her in a couple of weeks.

Classic=DJ, IMO.

I got my wife an OP (36) a couple of years ago, and she's been very happy with it. And it looks like a million bucks.

Take her out shopping some time and see what she gravitates to.

Modern DJ in 36mm is a good choice. My wife sports a 1166231 with white diamond dial. She picked it though. I have tried in the past to pick watches for her and usually fail. This time we spent hours looking at the Rolex website and other pics online and she picked this model above. She also wear a 34mm OP 1002 silver dial from 1967 which she has had for years. She picked that one too. The one I picked a DJ 26mm 6917 black diamond dial sits in the box and never is worn.....

Datejust seems to be the way to go here.

What do you guys think of going classic, with a steel 36 DJ, silver dial with sticks, with the fluted bezel?

The prices are very reasonable

probably easier to ask her, if i got my wife a DJ36, she'd probably come back with where's the daytona, my wife prefers the DaytonaC over any other rolex

First of all, great idea to gift your wife a Rolex!
I second all the recommendations of a 36mm DJ.
For the special occasion, you can go for a TT model, rose gold with pink dial (and eventually diamond markers)

I was looking at the LDJ28, but thought it was just too small. I went with the DJ31 and it looks great on her.

I bought my wife a Rolex a few years ago as a surprise, put a lot of thought into it, dial, size etc. and thought I had done a good job. Needless to say, it was returned and she picked for herself, the mid sized YM - 35mm. It would have been the LAST one I would have chosen for her but she LOVES it. Based on my experience, let her pick or at the very least get her input.

I have a good relationship with my AD so when I bought hers, acknowledging the fear she might not like it, they did not activate the warranty or remove stickers etc. and let me return it for full price which went toward the YM. If you can make that same arrangement that would be a good safety precaution and still allow for the surprise factor.

Good luck - nice gift and congrats to the wife on landing the dream job.

nice.

any will do but the classic OP is great if she's not wearing it 24/7 and doesn't want to reset all the time. DJ is second.

but, maybe wait 3mo after probation or something?

I purchased a DJ with a meteorite dial for my wife, and she loves it. You can’t go wrong with a DJ.

Too many variables to comment.
What's her style?
What size does she wear now?
Has she expressed an interest in the brand before?
SS, PM or combinations of?
How old is she?
What roll do you perceive it to play in her life?
What's her dream job?
Etc, etc etc.

Agree with all the comments recommending the DJ36.

I've taken my wife to a handful of AD's to have her try on various models and sizes and she always comes back to the DJ36.

Her preference is the fluted bezel, jubilee, black diamond dial. Which I think is a great combo for any occasion for a female.

If your wife likes the sub, but her wrists are too small, might consider the Yachtmaster 37mm. Love sport watches on women, saw a lot of them on ladies back when I had to commute downtown on the 4/5.

My wife's 20th anniversary gift... 31mm 178274. It is an elegant piece, perfect size for dress up or down. Diamonds are a great upgrade and *always* a good choice for a gift to any lady.
