Wow. My worst nightmare.

Everything I put up is engineered and reviewed by a few engineeers and then signed off on by a PE.

I imagine the due diligence on this is way more in depth. And we have to jump through hoops.

Lives lost. Terrible. Horrible.

And the people that designed and installed will never be the same. Also terrible.

At this time, number fatalities and injuries unknown. According to live news update, several cars are under fallen bridge; there is a red traffic light that cars were in line waiting for green when bridge collapsed.

Tragedy: New pedestrian Miami Sweetwater Bridge collapses.

The saddest part is this morning a 3rd party engineering firm subjected the span to a maximum stress test as part of the acceptance procedure for the installation work done over the weekend.

It apparently passed - but not sure of the results. Of course, rumors will swirl...

i saw it before it fell. that is a terrible design and i am not sure how it got appproved. a 174 foot span bridge needs support struts halfway through if it is that bulky on top.

rip to those who were unfortunate.

Tragedy: New pedestrian Miami Sweetwater Bridge collapses.

Very sad, unfortunately that is the way things are done here in the South Florida Miami area; This would be the third large structure that has fallen in the past ten years within the area.

1 - The 97th Ave Bridge unfinished and during a small hurricane
2- The Miami Dade County Community College parking Lot
3- The Pedestrian bridge just now.

It is strange how the bridge "passed" the load test only to fail in the most horrible way not too long after.

The county and the local dirty politicians seems to be awarding these bids (while filling their pockets) to their local and friendly construction firms that are just not fit to the task of such jobs.

Altogether just very sad...

Eliot - it did have midspan supports and a suspended tension pillar in the design. I think some major explaining will never salve the grief of the victims families and friends.

But the slide over technique didn’t allow for that.

Very sad news. I heard about it on the news in the car on my way to work this morning.

"FIU officials previously told reporters that the bridge was being built using Accelerated Bridge Construction methods. The university said the modular construction method reduces potential risks to workers, commuters and pedestrians and minimizes traffic interruptions"

The report I heard this morning said it was erected in 6 hours. Somebody has messed up here big-time. The renders also show is was a cable supported bridge but I don't see any of those in the photos.

My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased and injured and their families and friends.

The cable support part of the span was to be added later.

Figg designed the FIU bridge as a signature structure. Yet to be installed was a distinctive support mast from which cables would be suspended to hold up the span in an upside-down V shape.

Thanks for the additional info. Grady.

That would make me think that there was a mistake in the calculations and design on how the bridge would self support itself until the cables were installed, or, there should maybe have been some temporary support in place until that happened.

I'm really just thinking out loud here. Until an investigation happens we won't know for sure.

It took months to build on a plot of land adjacent and parallel to the roadway. Then in an overnight operation last Saturday it was pivoted into place and set on the supports at either end.

There are other longer unsupported spans used in highway construction but those are built on a different scale than this one.

I hadn’t mentioned this before but FIU is my alma mater - I was there on opening day in 1972 - was recruited away by Dr. Sileo from a scholarship at FAU. Was in the first graduating class - seeing the place today is so different than the campus back then.

Lots of good things about FIU will be dashed if this proves to be the result of something sinister in how it was funded, contracted and/or constructed.

Just a sad day for those who lost loved ones.

I doubt the school can be held accountable. The permitting would have been done by professional engineers, likely working for the city and state.

Based on what I have seen in the trades and in SFL, this comes as no surprise to me.

So what happened here?

1) Was it poor engineering fueled by incompetence, hubris, budget constraints...or all?

2) Was it the installing contractor not following directions to save money and time?

3) A perfect storm? Where a poorly designed and engineered project was executed negligently by the lowest bidder and we have this happen?

Now I'm going to tell you how i really feel.

I see this all time. I'm not an engineer, but I spend a great deal of time assisting contractors sort out the lousy scope of work they get on mechanical plans from clueless engineers and architects. ...thankfully nothing as crucial as a big bridge over 8th street in Miami...where thousands of people would be put at risk daily...but the mechanism of catastrophe is the same. The blind leading the blind if you will...

That being said, lots of contractors in that area are dumbfounded dipshits who cut corners and create their own shitstorms to save a buck. It isn't clear yet which of those scenarios happened here, but this was a massive failure.

It's a damn shame and should NEVER have happened

I’ve some insight in 2 of the 3 factors I mentioned - FIU is already mentioned in the selection and other choices. Don’t know if there’s fire under that smoke.

Yeah agree-

I’d add one other item to your list - products. Like substandard or inferior structural steel, prestressed concrete sections, concrete, fasteners, etc.

Absolutely agree. I was so that I forgot about that whole level of #$% that is coming out manufacturers these days.

Cost cutting, engineering hubris, incompetence, negligence....all if it applies to the product side as well.

There could have been one component of this bridge that wasn't to spec....and everyone relied upon that to allow the bridge to be supported without its central mast during set up...and then that cascaded into tragedy.
