Not sure if my Rolex is a fake

I purchased a job lot of watches from an auction site (storage lot). One of the watches was a “Rolex” oyster Perpetual datejust. Everything seems to be genuine including the crown etched on the crystal. The only thing that has me worried is that the back has a “see through” section. Ie skeleton. Could this be genuine or do I have a counterfeit?

Hi Jeff,

I'm not far from you.

See through back? would be aftermarket if it's real.

Not sure what you mean by skeleton?

Pix when you can.

I think OP means you can see the movement through the back. Like the skeletonized dials where you can see the movement from the front.
Clear caseback is certainly not a Rolex thing.

I think I know what the OP is talking about.
I'm guessing the watch is pretty much Rolex but the exclusive glass exhibition caseback is made by the open case-back maker, Thomas Preik from Custom Watch Concepts. The high quality sapphire crystal casebacks are waterproof and corrosion resistant but built to handle about 100 m+ WR test only so a Sub may have a 300 m WR on the dial but a 100 m WR caseback.

I'm sure everybody knows that Omega Sports watches are relatively thicker because of the open case-backs (and the Co-Axial calibres of course), right? Similarly, custom built Rolex open casebacks add 2-3mm to the overall height so keep that in mind.

The German based company also makes specific clear case-backs for some Omega Speedys, Vintage Breitlngs and Zenith watches. Once the customer receives the package from Germany, he or she needs to send the product to the local watch for installation who will remove the solid caseback and replacing it with the new open case-back,then have it pressure tested, specific open case-backs are so precise fitting that they always line up with the gasket correctly

p/s: I won't post any photos ( or memes) of a Rolex custom built open s.c caseback piece on the thread since the Mods won't find 'em one bit amusing !!!

Wow, you can tell all that from the OP, you are good.

OP - Post pictures so the members can give their opinions.

Without photos no one can tell.
For certain ROLEX do not use exhibition backs on their sports models, that said you can buy "exhibition" backs to fit Rolex cases.
Might be that - but more likely a fake

auction site / storage lot.......

I purchased a job lot of watches from an auction site (storage lot).

I've read enough, very unlikely to be a real Rolex but as other have already said, "let see some photo's!"

I’ve taken several photos but they are all too large to upload to this forum. I’ll try and work out how to downsize them. Where are you? You said you were not far away. I’m in Port Lincoln.

All good

Thanks for your help. I didn’t pay much for the parcel so it’s all good. Would have been nice to find a gem though!

Highly doubt everything else ‘seemed genuine’ as you stated....might want to take an expert with you next time.
