Help Identify Rolex Box

I was gifted a Sub by my grandfather over a decade ago and he gave it to me in this box. I know it doesn’t go with the sub he gave me (1997) so I was hoping someone could tell me what time period it is from and what references it could have potentially gone with. He had a bunch of watches and didn’t care at all about keeping the full set together so he probably just grabbed this out of the closet. Any help would be much appreciated.

Box is referred as a Bufkor box, elephant grain.
If you take out the inner mid box, it should say bufkor on the plastic side.
Available late 70s to early 80s.

I have one from circa 1984 and the inner plastic piece doesn't have any hallmarks. Did all of them say Bufkor on the bottom or were some blank?

The box in the first post is the 2nd generation Bufkor box from the 1980-1983/84 era. It has the large cowhide grain pattern which was replaced by the 3rd generation Bufkor box which had the fine cowhide grain pattern. Both the 2nd and 3rd generation are the same color - both on the inside and outside of the boxes.

The box depicted in the first post is for the non-sports models which is smaller in depth than the version used for the GMTs, Subs etc.

Lastly, not all the Bukfkor boxes are embossed with "Bufkor" on the bottom side of the center cup.

Bufkor boxes were used exclusively in the USA from around 1977 until the late 1980s when the 3rd variation Bufkor box was replaced by the "world map" box depicted here. (Also included are photos of all three generations of Bufkor boxes)

Springer - Great info. Huge thanks!

I have a 3rd gen box like your photo -- fine grain on the outer and inner boxes, no Bufkor logo on the center cup bottom and the correct height for a GMT/Sub (3" tall). My GMT/Oyster booklets are both copyright 6.1984 which matches both the serial and clasp code on my GMT II. It likely shipped with my watch since both previous owners claimed the same.

If only it had papers...
