I’m guessing magnification?
I think there was some mixed up crystal gaskets where the crystal would sit a touch lower and reduce the magnification a bit. Or you t could be an aftermarket crystal. |

Yeah low mag. It also has a small scratch on it I accidently dinged it on a door. You can only see it in certain light. And yeah very possible could be aftermarket crystal given the age of the timepiece. When they authenticate I'm assuming they make sure the movement is all genuine rolex but I doubt they go through every little piece. Anyway, would do u think? I think it is well worth 1000$ to me if I could send it to a RSC and get a proper mag and the dial re-tritiumed (less care about the lume act but the mag and a polish would be nice).

When it was authenticated they did not give you a quote? That’s unusual.
But I’d ask for a complete overhaul, with detailed and specific direction NOT to replace things like dial and hands. Otherwise, assuming they do it (they refuse older watches more and more these days), they will replace both with luminova. Some like this idea for a glowing dial on a vintage watch but it does reduce resale value and demand. Some pictures would be nice... |

I would send it in to get a service and replace the crystal. But the lume, I wouldn't mess with that. As Jim pointed out above, you want to keep your dial and hands original. Just my thoughts.

I’m assuming you could send it in and request a new dial and crystal if you want, but they won’t give you back the original dial. 7k usd sounds outrageously high

I thought I read somewhere that Dallas RSC would return vintage parts if requested. RSC won't relume a dial, they will just replace it.

$7K sounds like their estimate on the value of the watch for shipping purposes. They should have given you a list of what is being replaced at that price. I thought the $1500 price for the service of my wife's Tudor lady mini sub was outrageous. That included replacement of hands, dial, and crystal. In here situation the dial and hands were also depleted tritium and received Luminova replacements. I'd look at using one of our members (watch makers with a parts account) to do the job and skip Rolex with that price tag.

Also Rik @ Time Care Inc. In Florida is an excellent independent watchmaker who uses Rolex parts if you decide on an independent. He is very good at his work, and accessible by phone. |
