Interesting dilemma

So I recently purchased a BNIB Grand Seiko SBGM235 from an authorized GS dealer. Got a good price and had the watch shipped to me.

But in the shipment, the sales receipt was not included. I have been asking the authorized dealer for a copy of the sales receipt and they are blowing me off, totally ignoring this request. I have probably made 10 separate requests spanning the last couple of weeks.

I am perplexed by this. Why would an authorized dealer be so hesitant to give me a sales receipt for this watch? I am happy with the watch and up to this point, I was very happy with the service from the AD.

Any thoughts?

That is weird. Are you dealing with your salesperson? Can you elevate it to a supervisor?

Interesting dilemma

I’d escalate to manager , by telephone. And if you don’t get a receipt you could contact your credit card company if this is how you paid.

Also If the warranty book is filled out, I would confirm that the info matches the watch you received.

I have been dealing with the owner of the store. This is a huge store that is an AD for a number of high end brands. Moreover, they are one of the most well known ADs for Grand Seiko.

If the store wasn’t so well known, I would think something shady was going on. A little part of me wants to return the watch just for that reason

In this case, you could tell the owner you are going to dispute the charge to your CC if he/she does not produce sales receipt.

I totally agree. And I think I will post negative reviews on Google and Yelp.

I just can’t figure out why... I am 110% sure the watch is legit. It came with box, papers, etc. To my knowledge, there is nothing that the owner has to hide.

I don’t understand why he would give me everything but a receipt. Why is he afraid of producing a record of the transaction and providing that to me?

You can write him a letter or email and ask for it within a certain reasonable time period. Do you need it for insurance purposes? You could have your insurance agent ask for it.

When was warranty dated? Is owner afraid of being labeled a flipper by GS?

The warranty was dated the day I bought it and he is an authorized Grand Seiko dealer. So he wouldn't be considered a flipper.

Maybe GS frowns upon discounting? He did give me a nice discount.

Insurance is exactly why I need the receipt. Otherwise I would have to pay for an appraisal, which I don't want to do if I don't have to.

As long as I have the signature card dated and signed I would be ok.

Some GS ADs in Japan openly display large discounts in-store (20%+). I don't think giving a discount would be a problem.

Odd behavior indeed. What do you need it for? Just curious

My primary need is for insurance purposes. JM wants a sales receipt or appraisal to insure and I dont want to pay for an appraisal if a sales receipt will suffice. Plus, for a purchase of this size from an AD, I would like a receipt just for my records.

Return it for a refund. No need for the headache.

Certainly reasonable. I would call them and let them know you’ll be reporting them to your cc company and requesting a refund as well as contacting the BBB if you don’t get a receipt today.

I bet you get the receipt if you go to return it.

Or are you friends with a lawyer who would write a letter on his letterhead to ask for a sales receipt?

I am a retired lawyer before the jokes pour in.

Did you call them or email only? Email is not reliable and unless I check my spam box everyday I would be missing quite a few emails from my customers also.

Seiko couldn’t care less what an owner does with their property, and any discounting is between the reseller and the consumer – it’s his profit margin he’s reducing.

You don’t strictly need the receipt, your insurers should accept a copy of your CC statement, which the date will tally with that of the warranty. People lose/mislay receipts all the time, so a pragmatic alternative often suffices.

Are we talking about Dan at Timeless in Frisco here?

GS should care about discounting (not saying they are doing anything about it) IMO- not healthy for brand image if a brand is routinely heavily discounted (esp SS pieces).

Disagree, since the simple matter of fact is that watches, no matter their cost, are just another commodity.
Manufacturer makes commodity, sells to distribution network, who sell to authorised resellers. Consumer buys commodity from said resellers at whatever price both parties agree upon.
MSRP is just that – “suggested” retail price, an arbitrary figure that’s not set in stone.
Then again, we’re 1-2% of the total market – the vast majority of consumers don’t buy with the concern of what the residual value may be.

So I am happy to say we got some resolution...I texted him today saying that the watch is being returned if I do not get the sales receipt. He immediately responded apologizing for the delay/lack of responsiveness and said that they have been swamped with the holidays. I should have the sales receipt soon.

Thank you to all for your help/input.
