Amazing the things you notice on the loo ...

I must have been having a JJ moment this morning. With nothing better to do while nature took its course, I took the opportunity to closely examine the DJ while it was enjoying its rare wrist time. The first thing I noticed was that the Roman numerals actually have black centres and are not entirely YG, and second, lo and behold, the bottom of the dial said "T Swiss Made T". Of course, being a W-series, it was produced at the tail end of the tritium era.

This of course explains why no amount of exposure to light would make the DJ glow - DUH!

However, being made in 1996, I would have expected the tritium to still be glowing. How long is that stuff supposed to last?

i have always understood tritium to have a half life of around 11-12 years. lume has always been a weakness of Rolex. my dweller uses L and it will be super bright for 30 min and then starts to dim for a few hrs then goes pretty much dark.

Well James myself like the odd moment in the smallest room. Its sometimes great to have a little bit of peace and quiet.Where one can contemplate ones navel at ones leisure. And lets be honest Rolex lume has never been the best, but now has greatly improved. So perhaps James by the time you reach my age, maybe it will be on parr with the likes of Seiko and Panerai,to name a few.

This is the honest truth.......................I knew a guy who used to take a cup of tea and a sandwich with him when he went to the loo.

Woohoo! Tea, sandwiches and navel inspections - potty breaks are never going to be boring again!

But seriously, how long is the glow on tritium supposed to last, and does it need recharging like Luminova?

James, both of my TT DJs are dead as far as lume goes. But then they are 1983 and 1991 vintages, respectively, so I wouldn't expect them to glow in the dark, unless they had been exposed to a nuclear blast, and then I would start to get worried.

Tritium lume watches do not need to be exposed to light to charge up the glow, like Luminox or Luminova. But the life of Tritium start from when the paint batch was opened. And not when it was applied to dial they say life's around 12 years. But in my experience with Rolex less, but you may get the odd one that will glow a bit longer.
