Why go through trouble and expense of getting Sub (v. DJ)?

I'm not taking a position, but I'm interested in hearing the opinions here on the following point (playing devil's advocate): Why hunt for and pay more for a Sub when you can get a DJ easily, in light of:

- Both Sub and DJ available on an oyster bracelet. (These are more or less the same besides from the clasp).

- Both Sub (date) and DJ have the same movement (3135).

- Both are water resistant to a point where there is no functional difference for most owners. Sub (300m) v. DJ (100m).

- SS DJ costs $6,600 retail v. SS Sub date $8,550

Is the approx. $2,000 USD and extra effort worth it for a rotating bezel and mostly unused depth resistance? Is it simply the look that makes the difference? Interested in the thoughts of the WIS here.

My DJ for reference:

I personally prefer the sporty look of the "sport range" and think the DJ's are old mens watches.
(that is only my opinion) but it is what I "think" and why I would choose Sport/Professional.

It also helps these watches don't tank in resale value too! (not meant as a flipper remark)

I personally see DJs as quite dressy, I don't dress up all that often so I prefer the sporty aspect of a submariner.

If you would rather wear the Dj, then save your money! Me, I have 4 subs and just sold my only Dj.

Rolex is only as good as its sports range.

Some folks prefer the aesthetics of the sub. Perhaps its heritage. Fits their image of themselves a bit closer. etc.

There's no accounting for taste.

Totally different looks and functionality. Really cannot compare the two aside from they both keep hours, minutes, seconds and date.

Yeah, this. Look is very important when it comes to appeal. If I don't like the look of a watch I won't even care about its specs nor its price.

The Sub and DJ have very different looks, so comparing them is akin to comparing apples to oranges.

Horses for courses, etc.

Making a comparison based on functionality when we're talking about jewelry seems a little silly. Style and appearance is at least part of the decision about what watch to buy.

You might as well ask why Rolex bothers to make the submariner at all, when obviously it's the same as a datejust.

You'll find Sub lovers here that'll be close minded and bash this question. But in reality, its all just personal preference. Some prefer the more quiet elegance of a datejust, and some want a louder sports watch, both are fine options. But someone fixed on a Sub might not consider a DJ, and the other way around. Personally my datejust is my favorite watch and I'll never sell it, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't wear a good old Sub

I didn’t want a date complication and like the way a Submariner looks. I also like the multiple uses of the bezel.

Yes, it is easy to buy something that is available but I wouldn’t advise buying something you don’t want just because you can.

Actually as of this time the DJ 41 has a more modern 3235 movement while the sub is still rocking the 3135. As a whole Rolex sells more DJ than sub so it’s a relatively smaller subset of Rolex owners who are obsessed with “ mah diver watch,” lol. I have both, and have been wearing the DJ much more than the sub; it’s a whole lot more comfortable.

First off, the $6,600 DJ you are comparing is the 36mm version so it’s not quite an apples to apples comparison to the 40mm Submariner. A more accurate comparison would be the DJ41 which starts at $7,350.

Aside from the “dive features” - better water resistance and elapsed time bezel,

-The Submariner Date is a sports versus dress watch
-It’s more iconic
-Some people do not want polished center links and case as they scratch easier
-Glidelock clasp on the Sub is considered by many to be superior

Having said this, the DJ41 is a fine watch (as is the DJ36) and a worthy consideration for anyone looking for a Rolex. I would personally go with an OP39 which is cheaper than all of them if I was in the market for a dress watch.

Because we grew up wanting to be adventurers and can now afford to pretend we are.

Nobody grew up wanting to be a middle manager.

I have both. I like the DJ41 quite a bit but I LOVE my Submariner. I will never part with it. I could sell the DJ41 and sleep peacefully.

DJ is a nice watch. I may buy one someday. In fact, I thing the DJ is a great watch.

But it’s not a sub and will never be a sub.

I think the sub is a better dress watch than the DJ is a jeans and tee shirt watch.

I prefer the ruggedness of the sub.

I use the bezel to time things multiple times a day.

I will never sell my sub but if I could, would come out ahead of selling a DJ.

The sub is more iconic, as a sports watch.

Finally, if I bought only a DJ, I’d die wishing I’d bought a sub.

No one with a sub dies thinking I wish I’d owned a DJ.

Every watch guy should own a sub at some point (and a Speedmaster, too). The DJ is nice, but not that watch.

All that said, if the sub does not call to you, get the DJ. It’s still a great watch.

There was a thread a few days ago about people getting confidence from wearing a Rolex, OP got flamed and almost no one admitted they got more confident. The same way few would admit to feel more manly with a big sub or sea dweller than a DJ or DD on their wrist.

sub being more iconic than a dj is debatable

My first Rolex was a Datejust. Great watch, but I sold it when I purchased my first Patek. The only Rolex I currently own is a Submariner and I won't be parting with it, as I find it to be the perfect, no hassle, do everything watch.

This is really pretty funny! (And I still own a DJ and have never owned a Sub)

If Rolex (hypothetically speaking of course) was forced to discontinue either the Sub or DJ line - I think we all know which one would get chopped!

That aside, when I got the call for my AP RO, my DJ41 went out the door.

Beautiful watch tho!

A lot of people think a Submariner is a good financial investment. The fact that they might like how it looks or it’s history is of secondary importance

I like the aesthetics of the Sub quite a bit more. I think the DJ is a bit too dressy looking for my tastes, and I can't help but look at it as an older guys watch. The kind of guy that drives a '77 Cadillac Coupe DeVille with an 8-track player. Right or wrong, that's just what pops in my head.
