Uncontrollable itch after my first purchase

Hello fellow TRFers,

I think I need an intervention
Since I got my first rolex (sub) a couple of months ago, I've been strongly itching to get another watch
My AD has me on the list for the new BLNR and I got strong hints that those will be easier to obtain than BLRO, so I'm carefully optimistic about that, but that probably won't be until the fall / maybe next year.

In the mean time, I'm convincing myself that it could make financial sense (somewhat, I know watches are luxury items, etc) if I can get sth now to temporize the itch until i'm able to get the BLNR, then sell that watch then to fund the purchase. I'm happy to take a small hit (like 5-7%) but not more.

I was considering a 16710 pepsi, i believe the chances of this depreciating over the next year are pretty slim? Also considering a used JLC master ultrathin moon (white dial). The other option is to just wait it out as I'm not completely at a stage where I can afford multiple high end watches in the same year

I know that:
1- these are very different watches
2- the market can be unpredictable
3- that I need to decide where my collection is heading prior to making that decision

But I would still appreciate your input

Enjoy the watch you have now first. Buying too many too quickly is always a mistake.

Take a deep breath and take your time. Buy what you really want. I don't think you probably will lose on the BLNR, but it is possible. If you buy what you want, you won't have to worry about selling or future value.

I totally understand. I thought I would be satisfied for a while after my first purchase. But instead I just found a new watch to obssess over purchasing. Oh well...

It’s hard to beat. I bought my first one, couldn’t stop at one. Bought two more within 45 days.

Hopefully you have met other major financial goals and have many renewable sources of income, prior to finding TRF and Rolex.

I have been looking and looking since getting my first one this past Xmas ( DJII) and I really like the choices Omega and Tudor have to offer but then a GMT Master, Sea-dweller or Subby would be nice to

Stick with what you have. Buying something just to buy something rarely works out.

Sometimes the anticipation of these luxuries is more satisfying than actually enjoying them. After a while, the pieces grow on you and your urge to move to the next can slow down...but it'll never end. Enjoy the process of watch buying! You'll go through phases! This won't be your last, trust me :-)

Totally agree. I turned through many watches fast in the beginning. It is a mistake

I did something similar. Bought my first Rolex and within two months the second game
I then put a list of watches I want and tried to go after it depending on availability and my financial status.

It's a disease! You'll find that you'll begin to frequently browse watch recon and trusted seller websites. I find myself consuming a fair amount of youtube and other watch related content as well.

This is so true.. i lost $$$ in the past, trying to get a hold of every watch that caught my attention, then eventually flipping.

As i matured into the hobby, it had help me understand what i really personally want in a watch collection as I read more articles, watch video reviews and try on hundreds of watches thru ADS and friends. These practices has helped me alot in avoiding impulsive purchases...

But watch collecting is a process.. it’s the journey that matters most

ok . so now you've got the first Rolex - many more will surely come... but also;

you've now got to look forward to "your first scratch or ding" and the horror of it.

asking on the forum questions like"....how much does my rolex loose if my dog wears it"

and reading jerks responses like mine ;o)

all in all - being part of the family!!!! enjoy

My fondness for my watches grows the longer I have them! The experiences and stories behind each one end up becoming the true value of them. I know that will sound bonkers to most on here though

Why not broaden your looking and do some research on diverse watch collections. There are a lot of watches out there that will help you scratch the itch while you wait on your AD. I have owned the Rolex WG BLRO and I enjoyed it but it did not stay in the collection long and I have a limited interest in the SS BLRO. What I do love is the Tudor GMT Pepsi and find it to be a great wear and the price did not crush the bank. A Black Bay Chrono will also work to help with a Chronograph issue as well as a Omega Speedmaster. Be patient, research, learn and go try on some other watches from brands other than Rolex. There are some cool watches out there and the longer you stay in this hobby the more you learn and typically the more other brands will appeal to you. Good luck and enjoy.

Not sure that buying something that you know you are going to flip once your 'sought after' watch becomes available, would make much sense. The one you are waiting on might come quicker than you think, leaving you to flip the temporary one in a hurry. In those circumstances, you are still likely to take a hit once the potential buyer realises your hurry for cash, and the 5 to 7% depreciation you suggest strikes me as optimistic, possibly even on a 16710 despite ongoing trends and prices. Personally I wodul be inclined to wait particularly since you already have the Sub?

Nothing wrong with buying. Just don’t start selling and flipping. It becomes habitual.

very sound advice. Thank you for your input.
I'm tremendously enjoying the sub, but that doesn't necessarily mean we're mutually exclusive?
