Insurance & Tune Up

Good Morning,

I've just join this Forum. Thanks for all the thread informations.

I would like your feedback and opinions about watch insurance and tune-up maintenance.

When I brought my $ 40,000 Oyster Perpetual Day Date in 2004, I brought insurance through my home jewellery coverage. It cost $ 350/year just for the watch. My main concern was theft. I cancelled it after 4 years as I only wear my watch during the daytime or at special night events. I'm currently 57 yrs old so I don't go clubbing. I basically work and stay at home with my family.

Do others have insurance coverage ?

Regarding tune-up and maintenance, I brought my watch twice to the head office on St. Clair Ave. Each time, it cost $ 750 for the technician to open the watch, take apart and add lubricants.

How often do you bring your watch in and what's your opinion on maintenance ?

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

My watches are insured and they are serviced when they no longer perform correctly

I live in South Africa and all my watches are insured. I service my watches when I start noticing time keeping issues.

The value proposition of insurance is pretty simple - I'm sure you're in a position to do the math. If you don't feel that it's at risk and you don't mind dropping $40-50k on a new one if something happens, then don't. But just consider... if your home gets burgled or your cleaning person grabs it or your house catches on fire or someone slips it off your wrist or robs you on the street, then you're out that money. Kind of a no brainer for me even though my GMT costs 20% of your DD.

Get the watch serviced every 5-7 years or when it stops working properly - whichever comes first.

We have a jewelry rider that covers everything, including damage.

If I was only insuring a single watch, I’d probably opt not to do so.

I service watches when rate/amplitude starts to suffer.

Can I ask do people in the UK usually just add way he’s to their house insurance or use someone else? Sorry for hijacking your thread:)
