I'm torn

Hi all, I rarely post here, but I'm in two minds about a transaction and thought it would be interesting to see what other people think.
I currently have an OP39 grape dial and a YG Submariner. I am thinking of selling the Submariner because much as I love it, sometimes it's a bit over the top and "blingy". I don't have a dress watch and so I am thinking of selling it and buying either a Breguet or a Moser (pre-owned).
I'm worried that once the Sub is gone I'll miss it as I've had it for 5 years now.
Will a dress watch give me enough of a "gold fix"?
I know that ultimately only I can decide, but I'm still interested in other peoples thoughts - has anyone ever sold a gold Sub and regretted it?

I've never owned a gold Sub so maybe I'm not best placed to avise. That said, would a ceramic white dial Daytona not put you in that classic not too blingy but still a heavy hitter place?

Breguet make some amazing looking watches and have the history to match both their style and their price point. If I was looking to spend 5 figures on a dress watch they'd definitely be on my short list.

Whilst I obviously can't speak for you, I can't justify spending that much money on a watch I know I wouldn't wear very often. Sure nobody really cares if you wear a dress watch as a daily, but I would be wary about wearing such a watch in the rain, for example, not even because of worries about water resistance, rather because water and leather aren't a great mix. You'll have noticed that happens rather a lot round this way. I'd also be a bit wary wearing it during various day-to-day activities, even down to playing with my daughter, lest it struggle to survive her habit of attempting to scratch the crap out of the shiny thing on my left wrist. Perhaps that means I'm slightly too anal for my own good, but it may be a question worth asking yourself.

Certainly, if I'm spending that much on a watch, I want to make sure I get maximum enjoyment out of it, which means wearing it regularly in a rotation.

I would stay with rolex. So if the yg sub is too much bling, why not trade it for a steel sub + a DJ with fluted bezel and jubilee. That way you have more variety as daily wear (OP + sub) plus a dressy classic watch (DJ). The Only drawback is loss of gold (but that is not an issue for me at all). Food for thought.

P.s. This scenario has much better value retention than the Breguet route. So in future if you get bored, the change won't be that expensive

I agree with both these. I guess it comes down to how often you'll wear it. I had a very nice dress watch, which I thought I really NEEDED, but I just didn't wear it often enough. For me, I really used to care what other people thought and would make some decisions based on that. Once I stopped caring what others thought, I sold all of my watches but the two I love the most and wear the most.

I don't find the Sub to be very bling, it's kind of understated IMHO. As much as I love Breguet classic watches and some Moser models, I wouldn't sell my Sub if I had one, and I don't even like the supercase. Sports steel Rolex are becoming increasingly difficult to get. Do not sell unless you really dislike it.

I’m going to be comparing the Moser and Breguet on Monday. I’ll be wearing the Sub all weekend to see how attached to it I feel...

Have you thought about swapping the YG Sub for a YG DD? The DD pulls it off far better.

So I checked out the Moser and the Breguet. Really liked the Moser Endeavour, much more than the Breguet, which surprised me. However I'm not ready to lose the Sub. I think keeping the Sub and adding a Moser might be the way forward. I'll juggle a few numbers and see if that's feasible.
Thank you everyone for all your advice and feedback, it was appreciated.

If you going to sell a YG Rolex go for a Patek Calatrava.

I wouldn’t sell a Rolex to fund a Moser or a Breguet. What you’re proposing doesn’t seem like a good deal. Far better dress watches out there in my opinion.

That is the most sensible thing to do, have a look at Grand Seiko, they make some of the best dress watches around imho

I checked out the Moser at Westime in Beverly Hills a couple months ago. They're beautiful but I'm not much of a dress watch guy either. If I needed one they would be on my short list. I think Nomos also makes some striking pieces.
