DSSD mini gallery
Since the DSSD's crystal and bezel are EXTREMELY reflective, I've been experimenting taking pics of it in a black laundry bag instead of the white and liked the way these came out (in particularly the first one since it actually almost looks like it's under the Deep Sea) ;o)
Sadly not mine but at least the pics are |

???, I must admit out of all the forums I visit, TRF is probably the leader when it comes to members in general not reading posts in very much detail prior to commenting. To quote the OP, "Sadly not mine but at least the pics are"

Thx for all the replies guys, photography (especially macro) happens to be one of my hobbies (on and off) since Jr. High School. Have been getting back into it lately with watches.
directioneng, that was a good one! I bet you had Moby going there for a sec... Nothing fancy here, I was helping my bro-in-law test out his Canon S5 since he mentioned he seemed to be having some problems with it. I think the camera is fine just that there may be some problems with the custom white-balance setting bouncing back and forth when used (hard to explain in a post). My "lightbox" set up is also very basic, nothing fancy at all. I use a Ikea black nylon laundry bag that happens to have a opaque circle which I then light up the scene with an Ikea florescent desklamp. I may cover the opaque circle with a piece of paper to further soften the lighting and then set the camera for longer exposures. The great thing is that I'm able to cover up the entire scene so I do not receive any background color/light. Will post pics of the set up later. |

Equipment: - any of Canon S3 IS / Canon S5 IS / Sony DSC-T9 - no filters or adapters - generally no post photo retouching (at least not on this set) As for my lightbox setup, all from Ikea - except for the watch, pillow and piece of paper ;o) A combo of adding the piece of paper or lifting the lamp softens/reduces the lighting provided to reduce glare: Interior of lightbox: The great thing about the laundry bag is that it has a flap (not shown) that covers the opening so I don't introduce room lighting/reflections into the scene. |

Come on Turbo...more pics of the DSSD please & less of the equipment. I still think you have taken some of the best pics I've ever seen...I want more of that & less equipment. Sorry...it's just that I come here for action shots of watches! Cheers.

Turbo, thanks for the info. It's great to see the inginuity of various TRF members when it comes to lightboxes. Personally I think that on this set the chromatic aberrations create a certain style with the photos which people would spend time in post production creating!
You were probably pushing the lens/sensor combination pretty close to the edge of it's envelope and the desire for Canon to squeeze and extra 2 MP out of the S5 may have an impact. As I said great pictures!

Very nice photos. I have to ask though - did you intentionally leave the crown unscrewed?

Yes. As the watch was wound at the time of this shoot, I pulled it out to position two to hack the seconds hand at 12. Intention was to capture a shot of it illuminating the coronet logo on the dial via the lume dot on the seconds hand (plus I wasn't going for the sweeping lume look).
