Introducing myself

Hello,

I am Martin Skeet, I wrote the book ‘Vintage Rolex Sports Models’ published by Schiffer Publishing. After 25 years of working with Rolex as a hobby I am now working full time with watches. I have just created my website which is my name with no spaces followed by com. I’d love to know what you all think of it. The new expanded edition of the book is out in October. I look forward to being a regular contributor here.

Martin

My favourite vintage Rolex book - bought my copy in around 2005 from the Old Watch Shop in Southport, UK. Great to have you on the forum. I will certainly checkout your website.

Hi all,

Thanks for the hello. I am a bit in the dark on exact availability but Amazon has it listed (the link on my site). Otherwise check out Schiffer Publishing direct.

Thanks

Thank you for all the warm welcomes. It’s flattering to be called an expert but I would never use those words myself, I am, I think a generalist about Sports watches. There are some fantastic studies of individual watch types being done by many members here, Just look at the DRSD site about Double Red Sea-Dwellers or some other the links regularly posted here. There are real model experts here.

With the book it’s a very hard balance - it has to be a general primer to attract a wide audience, when in fact you could really devote the whole book to Submariners and all the minute variations alone. It also has to tell a simple chronology that in itself misses a few variations out. If if it was written for experts it would be impregnable to people who want the big picture, I also personally struggle a little with the desire to define every single minute dial variation ‘the long E’ GMT dial as an example. I don’t want to sound like a heathen but I can honestly say I know it’s there but does it really matter that much. If the book got into that level of detail it be 4 times as long and no one would buy it. It’s an imperfect attempt of a history and it will always be so.
