Where can I buy one of these? Is one type better than the other?

My AD gave me a Roberto Coin one, but I think it's only for stones as you have to put the item inside the loupe to see anything...

If its a real real real small watch you're ok it might still fit!!

If its a DSSD you might fit the end link in only !!!

I just got a cheap one to play with. 30x and it works. I paid like 8.00 with shipping.

What magnification is best? I see 4x...7x...10x...

I got the folding one and it is a 30x it works fine. If the loupe is like optics for a gun the higher the number the higher the magnification.

What are you using it for?

Hi Jen,

A x6 is probably all you need. I have one that has a x4 and a x6. You can put them together for a x10.

A x30 takes a bit of getting used to IMO.

Just ask JJ, he knows for sure.

I will say a 10X is the best. I have one with a LED light and it works great, it looks like this.

Loupes are for your average person, us WIS's needed something a bit more powerful...

If you want a Rolex-quality loupe, then Zeiss is the one to buy. I have two, a 10x and a 6x. The 10x is the diamond grading standard power, and 6x is much more practical. Zeiss makes a very nice large 22mm diameter 6x and the 10x is 13mm.

Like watches, you get what you pay for. I've used loupes and microscopes for many years and the cheap loupes are the equivalent to cheap watches. If accuracy and sharpness across the field of view are important, then a Zeiss loupe is one you'll have forever, for it truly is the Rolex of optics.

Jen, I'm a coin collector so I know. Buy a triplet lens such as Bausch and Lomb. There triplet is called Hastings and would buy either a 7 power or 10 power loupe. There loupe is made up of three lenses put together. The clarity is awesome and the price is around $50.00 !!!

I believe Chronoswiss, A.Lange&Sohne and IWC have loupes as giveaways.

Here's one I got before Christmas from my favourite AD.

10X will be fine for all you will need,you can get some with 10x and 30x combined.

Nice IWC loupe!!!

But somehow it is useless for me...I buy only new watches from ad's!!

But very usefull for a vintage watch collector or connoisseur!

I completely agree with that information,as a former diamond grader the 10x is quite correct,its the standard worldwide magnification for grading.

Over the years I too have used many other types of triplet lens owned by colleagues etc,and found by far and away the Zeiss to be the crispest,its also aplanatically corrected,so the edge of the lens is as in focus as the centre with no hazing or distortion.True,its a little more expensive than the others,but if its the only one you plan to buy,then buy right first off and it will serve you brilliantly forever. I still have mine,and still use it 15 years on!
