Last of the triple - 116520 Daytona “Cream” dial

So this was a wildcard as I hadn’t paid much thought to one of these until recently and had only just started my research on them so I hope I’ve not made a balls up and have opted for the right one!

Any of you Daytona experts, please let me know!

So my understanding is when the 116520 was released, for the first couple of years the white dials had a flaw where they naturally turned cream with age and this was only in the first 2 years of production. Also, the hands are the thinner hands from the previous 16520 models and again, this is for the first 2 years and a K serial puts this firmly right.

Condition is great for the age and couldn’t be happier to add to my general collection but also my “older” Rolex watches.

Nice pickup on your Panna/Cream dial Daytone!

I was fortunate to get a P series a while back. Overtime I feel these Panna’s will be as collectable and sought after as the 5 digit Patrizzi’s.

This does not look creamy to my eyes. Cream color must be in the eye of the beholder. I can see some tint in the light on one of the pics. That’s the problem is one never really knows. In the end buy what you like and not for investment and you will be golden.

Its mainly watch dealers who hope to extract more money calling these watches rare or hot must have, but in the real world hundreds or could be a thousand plus around.I don't know how this term rarity by many of today's dealers can be used for the cream modern Daytona 116520 only to drive the price up to those willing to pay. As the white cream whatever you want to call it Daytona can be found from 2000 P serial right up to 2005 F serial.Still its a nice watch as Daytona's go with one of the best chrono movements made today.

Hi Padi,

Regardless how it started on early 116520s, (yes, mainly dealers trying to squeeze more profit from watch sales after noticing the color change), we need to acknowledge dial variations along with their current value. Now these watches command more money for those buying and collectors who didn’t pay a premium are happy.

Just because folks like us think a small font change on a dial (going back to 1960s Subs), movement change (16710 3186), dials changing colors due to manufacturing processes (many actually think of them as defective), etc... shouldn’t command more money, it does.

In this era, people need to adapt to stay current with the industry even as insane things are.

With this 116520, white dials that didn’t change , far outnumber the cream dials. So cream dials are worth more since people are paying more. Again, some folks see this as a defect, others see it as beautiful, opportunity , or something to chase like error cards / comics, error stamps, error currency, etc...

I love how it looks. Unfortunately, supply vs, demand make it command a price premium.

They are beautiful watches,I have a number but luckily bought before the hype. One dealer sold me a p series 116520 for peanuts as he said the dial was faulty and discoloured.Needless to say one of my best purchases and a p serial, the one to have as a transitional model from the 16520.
What I like is there are so many dial shade variations in the ‘Panna’ watches from light cream, green tint and lately I saw an almost light brown colour tropical dial.
All amazing and highly collectible watches.
Also there are never many Panna dials or original white dials ever for sale and to be honest it’s as hard to find unblemished dials from the early series.

It is indeed a rare piece. There are thousands upon thousand Rolex 116520 white dials but only a few cream dial, thin hand versions. Search Chrono24 and filter by year. Only a few 2000/2001 models available. Personally that watch will command high $$ over the next 10-20 years.

Very nice. I've seen some Daytonas (and Polar Explorers) with some crazy beautiful cream dials.

Congrats and enjoy!

I never noticed it on any Daytonas, only Explls. Makes me wonder if they used the same paint.

It happens to both but I doubt it’s the same paint, they were 20 years apart

Thanks for the comments people and it’s reassuring to hear majority of the positive comments.

I’ve just started to appreciate some of the preowned watches as they offer something different to the newer ones and feel different (been wearing my Rootbeer, Nipple Dial for the last few days and don’t think about rotating it yet!)

Don’t agree with this statement at all.
If you care to do a search maybe on Chrono24 24 or EBay or any dealers for that matter you will see that only a very few of these ‘Panna’Daytona’s will be found as they are in very short supply and thus priced accordingly relative to standard Daytona’s of this period.Supply and demand if you understand?
Get your facts straight first and have correct evidence before you make inaccurate comments.

Seriously, what is your obsession with downplaying watches that are clearly and obviously harder to find than others. This is the real world. What world do you exist in?

'Still a nice watch'... oh nice of you to say , after you basically said it's not worth a dime more than any other 116520. Guess what, you're wrong, plain and simple. I know you've been around here forever, I know have a wealth of knowledge for certain aspects in this hobby, but you have completely lost touch with reality in regards to market value and demand. And frankly, you cloak your negativity with a last minute comment about it being a nice watch, but in the reality what you're really saying in most of your comments is that everyone else is stupid for buying into the rarity and hype.

Show me where I can buy one of these watches for the same price as any other 116520. I'm ready with the wire transfer. Actually, just show me a few that are currently for sale! I'd like to see the hundreds that you claim are "around", as you put it.

Is it Paul Newman's Daytona? Of course not, no one ever claimed it was (not that I expect you to find anything special about that watch anyway lol) but you say there might only be hundreds in existence, for a manufacturer that you constantly say (with contempt) produces millions and millions of watches!?

Again, congrats to the OP on a fantastic watch and specifically a variant that is really special. I am sorry to drag out the negativity of what should be nothing more than a celebration for you

Great watch. Found a Panna a few months back for a great price and the members here helped confirm my purchase. We all know the marketing of rare traits drives demand.
Rolex is a brand that has mastered this concept and consumers love the hunt. Enjoy the watch, Panna Daytona’s will never be Paul Newman’s, but do think it will appreciate.
