No, the popularity of the sub and gmt did not come out of thin air. OP is very nice, but lacks the same function and history of the sub or gmt.

Each watch is its own thing. The OP39 is a great watch by itself.

lol it will never be, even if some folks think that. It's an oyster perpetual and not a sub or a gmt. It even says so on the dial

No but it's a nice reference. Forget about next Sub or Gmt and get one Imo.

Most would laugh when, a few years ago, people asked if the Patek Aquanaut would ever be a sought after classic. No one can predict these things, but they're very nice watches that fill an interesting spot in the line up. No need to compare them to the sub or GMT, totally different animals.

Never say never.

There was a time when Daytonas weren’t popular, and look at them now.

No other watch has as much history as the "Oyster" line.

With that said... All it takes is one rapper to sing how they "slap some ice on their OP39" and boom. 500% over MSRP.

It's a great watch but not close. I almost bought one as my second Rolex, unfortunately in person I was slightly let down. This is when you compare it to the higher sport watches like Sub/EXP/GMT etc. It felt much different than my GMT. They downgrade a few things notably the non stamped clasp which bothered me immediately, no easy link and basic dial. It is a GREAT watch, it would be a wonderful idea to consolidate a bunch of lower watches you have and get an OP because I would much rather have that than a bunch of shitters. I also like it's history, no date if you want a clean look, and no frills attitude.

Without the OP, the others wouldn't exist. Nonetheless, it will only become popular when the herd runs out of DJs to snarf up.

Short answer no and cannot see why anyone would think it could, although watches like the OP have a lot of history in the RWC it was never made to contest the now called sports watches..

I think the OP is a fine watch that has been discovered by the masses because of the SS Rolex Sport watch shortage. It will never be a Submariner, GMT or even a Date Just. The history is too deep for those watches but that does not mean that the OP does not have a place. It is a cool model for the money.

Nope. Really nice watch, but limited appeal. No date, no moving or fluted bezel, no 4th hand. Personally, I like them a lot. Bog simple, no distractions from basic time.

Subs and GMTs are purpose built for specific functions

Funny you mention the clasp- I actually really appreciate the milled rather than applied coronet. Lack of easylink is definitely a bummer, but that can be remedied with some effort and $$$
