Explorer 14270 vs Explorer 114270

Which do you prefer, Explorer 14270 36mm or Explorer 114270 36mm?

14270

114270

Which one will be most appealing to collectors in the future?
Why?

I voted 114270, simply because of the movement refinements.

barring the patina potential of the tritium dial, the only really collectible 14270 is the blackout dial, regular 14270s/114270s will not be collector items unless you have a unique serial number which appeals to a small niche group

Had 114270 twice and think would buy next time (if so) a 14270 as dislike the odd spring bar holes on the 114270 which prevent the use of most alternate bracelets

I see that the 14270 36mm and 114270 36mm Explorers are not very appreciated.

I love my 114270. Yeah sure, if I could afford a 1016 I'd get one. But I think the 114270 is a great looking all-rounder. I guess that's always been part of the Explorer allure, a tool watch that runs the gamut between sport and dress. And price-wise, they're attainable.

These references do not have the charm of the 1016 or the functionality/quality of the 6 digit reference.

I think they will appeal to people who like the understated simplicity of the Explorer, want the smaller 36mm size but cannot afford or don't want to pay the money for the 1016.

I don't see them ever being highly desired. There are tons of these out there. I actually think the current price for this watch is a ripoff. It's riding on the Rolex name and the stainless steel craze. As they say, a rising tide lifts all boats.

I don't understand it either, I think this is perfection. They ruined the Explorer 1 when they went 39mm IMO.

I like the classic 36mm, but prefer to wear the 39mm. All around great watch.

Both are excellent choices

While just about everything on the newer version is spot on, the lugs on the modern release were the cause of my letting it go

The profile and balance of the original 36mm is just perfect.

Both are great watches (though I prefer the 114270 for the solid end links, non-tritium dial and upgraded movement).

Supremely comfortable compared to newer Rolexes due to the lighter "hollow" centre links (still feels well built) and well proportioned. Also the only 36mm Rolex with a clasp safety and the 114270 (non-tritium only) dial should not deteriorate. The 3000/3130 movements are proven, quiet and easily serviceable.

They go well with any occasion - suit, t-shirt, etc. Nice, clean dial where you can actually tell the time!

Although their values have crept up, I think they are better value than the hallowed 1016.

The 3000 caliber of the Explorer 14270 is much worse than the 3130 caliber of the Explorer 114270 ?

I find it strange how many mint/NOS five digit Subs and GMT’s I’ve seen over the years, but it’s actually really hard to come by a mint/NOS 14270 or 114270.

I think many were simply well used as intended...or they’re all in safes in Japan.

Agree. The 114270 is a true classic.

There were plenty around - full kit - in 2010 or so. I missed out. Ended up getting an F serial 114270 no B&P last year. First time ever buying the watch "alfresco."

I prefer the SELs to the hollow links on its predecessor.

I love this thing / wearing it now. Such a perfectly balanced watch.

Congrats to the OP!

I just purchased a 14270 from Watchbox/Govberg, that should arrive tomorrow. I voted 114270 in this thread, but I wasn't overly concerned with either the 14270 or 114270 when I bought, I just slept on it, and decided that the 36mm Explorer would be right for me. Got a stellar deal on the watch, at least I think I did.

Regardless, the one I purchased is an "A" serial with Non Tritium dial, so I am assuming it's Luminova? It also has the fliplock oyster bracelet, so later production right? Case lugs aren't drilled etc.

Buying the watch to use and wear, don't care if it's "perfect" or not. It will be a "tool" in my little watch arsenal.

I think Rolex made a mistake changing the Explorer size from 36mm to 39mm.
At 36mm it was an iconic watch model which stood the test of time for decades.
At 39mm I think the watch looks too large and is less appealing than the 36mm, so my guess is that there is now less consumer interest for the Explorer.
