16610 = Vintage now?

Now that Rolex has a second ceramic bezel submariner upgrade (116610 and 216610), can we now classify the last aluminum bezeled model (16610) to be a vintage piece?

Obsolete, maybe, but not vintage.

I’d use the term modern classic before vintage. I tend to consider 4 digit (eg: 5513) as vintage since they’re around 50 years old now. However, I know that some are willing to classify anything neo-modern as vintage. Since I have the 4, 5, 6 digit its pretty cool to see the advances of the variant.

At this rate, anything without a maxi case is vintage.
But I agree with previous posts, Modern Classic is a better term for 5 digits.

I don't think so. Even a 16800 is just considered transitional / neo vintage.

No. Go away and come back in ten years for final disapproval.

Is a 1987 watch vintage? Is a 2010 watch vintage? I'd say "no" to either. Maybe 1987 is "retro"?

I would agree with a classic! I love 5 digit Rolex's and 4 digits. I'm not a fan of anything Ceramic at all.

Doesn't Rolex class a watch being 25 years+ as vintage and different service pricing, or am I thinking of a different brand?

I'm curious. Does the name "vintage," or any other name, change the desirability, value or collect-ability of a watch? I ask because I've never heard of anything that is called vintage becoming more valuable just because someone calls it vintage. Maybe I am missing something here. This relentless desire to call something vintage is evidenced by the several threads here on TRF makes me wonder whether I missed out on something during my years of collecting watches.

The fascination and desire to call something vintage definitely has me perplexed.

So, if it makes you happy, yes, a Sub 16610 is very, very vintage. It's as vintage as you make it and now that I think about it, that makes my 16610 vintage too.

Introduced in 1989. Cars from that era would be called a 'modern classic'.

I wouldn't call it vintage.

Tough crowd! After all isn’t “vintage” just another fancy word or description of something that’s old and used?

"evidenced by several threads" you mean "several monthly threads." I agree I don't know why it keeps coming up with specific examples to debate.

Like with wine, wait until they age a bit on the color (yellow-ish hour markers, bezel fading etc.). Call it vintage or not, they will still be desirable.

My guess is they will be in high demand in a decade or two, due to the combo of vintage patina + robustness of materials (like saphire) making them not as fragile as older vintage.
