SPB14X - Made in Japan?

Hello everyone -- today I saw the SPB143 (SBDC101 in Japan) in person, and I find it to be beautiful, with a good history. (I do not deny that James Stacey had at least some influence on my attraction to the watch. )

Before I commit for a purchase, however, I wanted to please ask one (dumb) question -- is the watch actually "Made in Japan"? I saw the word "Japan" on the dial and also on the caseback -- but I was not sure what that really meant. For example, it could mean that the watch's movement is Japanese -- but the watch could have been cased/assembled in a different country...

I also know of the arguments regarding whether "Made in Country ABC" really is that meaningful, especially because different countries have different laws/regulations/definitions surrounding that label. (Same goes for the label "Swiss made.") I do not disagree with those arguments (at all) -- just asking because I find "Made in Japan" to be more fun and reliable in general -- it is more emotional, as opposed to being based on solid logic or rationale. (I am also biased because I lived in Japan for a few years before.) Thank you!!!

Welcome to the Forum. The 143 is a cool watch and a strap monster. I enjoy mine. I can not answer your question on the made in Japan part. A more knowledgeable member will be along soon with an answer I am sure.

I want to avoid the slippery slope of "in-house" and what that means, but Seiko is a fully integrated company. They make all their components in Japan, including difficult parts such as the hairspring.

They do greatly benefit from economies of scale, being such a large company.

I do not think this watch is available in the US. Any recommendations on a good site to buy from?
