If I loose my watch then what?

Hi all,

Like most of you I buy my watches to wear but I have a concern and I was wondering if others share it. I have no fear of damaging my watches as I wear them but what if they are stolen or just lost? I have all my discontinued watches (BLNR 116710, Hulk etc.) insured for their current value so replacing them would be a hassle but doable. As an example the Hulk is insured for 20K so I would just get my insurance check and buy it that week at a Grey dealer. My issue is with the current production watches I have. Like most of you I had to jump through some hoops and wait a while to get my Daytona and Pepsi and I am only able to insure them at MSRP because technically that is what they can be replaced for. However as we all know, if they are lost or stolen then they are essentially irreplaceable without spending more or waiting for years (again). Because of this I am hesitant to travel with them. I am also concerned of having them stolen from my home even though I have an alarm system etc. I love the hobby and don't mind building a relationship and waiting for the watches I really want. (I've been waiting on a blue SkyD for 18 months) I just don't want to wait for the same watch twice. Am I being paranoid?
Thoughts?

Sounds like you should just put them in a safety deposit box and never look at them again.

Have you ever had a watch lost or stolen?

The likelihood of it happening is small. You can either just enjoy them or live in fear and then what is the point of even having them.

Are you suggesting you'll lose the watch because it's too loose?

Insure 'em. Not enough? Get an alarm system. Not enough? Get a safe. Not enough? Well, maybe this is not the right hobby for you.

Precautionary measures can only do so much, they will just buy you peace of mind to a certain threshold. Common sense and awareness will get you much further.

Fantastic collection - try to enjoy it in good health and not stress yourself to death over it.

Wear with mental wellness not madness

You carry the watch, not carried by the watch

I think fears of losing, getting watches stolen are not so uncommon or unreasonable.

Check out Hodinkee watch insurance. You can insure your watches for above MSRP. (and I think the value automatically adjusts based on market value should your watch get stolen)

Also Jewellers Mutual will insure against loss.

can you not get the watches appraised for their market values and get them insured accordingly?

Just wear your watches and enjoy them. You’re going to give yourself an ulcer worrying like that.

I recommend a good safe for when you are not wearing them (and for other valuables, for that matter), and then wearing them without worrying too much about the what-ifs.

OP, to answer your question; Yes you are being paranoid.

Life is full of questions we don’t know the answer to, none of us know what is going to happen tomorrow so all you can do is take reasonable steps to protect yourself, your loved ones and your possessions. If you have done that then just get on with enjoying life, you cannot plan everything.

Hodinkee insurances for up to 150% of value. I'm not worried one bit.

People die fighting to protect whales, put a fight up for your piece or be a whale. Get insurance as well. In the unlikely event you survive, at least you'll have some dough. I'm sure they'll fight tooth and nail to give you a payout also. Enjoy your life!

I have. An AP when I was 17. Someone else likely has it now.

Keep in mind, insurance companies have more buying power than consumers.

I did have a Seamaster stolen years ago and had it covered. Had the newer version on my wrist in less than a week. State Farm Personal Articles policy.

I would think there would be an insurance company out there where you could get a stated value policy if you want to pay the premium for it.
