Old 36mm Explorer (14270) vs new 36mm Explorer (124270)
I’m probably pulling the pin on a grenade with this one, but any 14270 (or 114270) owners here thinking about switching to the new 124270?

Ned to get a look at the new one I person but the 114270 for me was the best explorer 1. Always regretted not buying a NOS one I was looking at in the AD after they got discontinued. Good move coming back to 36 on the new model though, looking forward to seeing one.

I'm definitely switching to 124270. Currently have a 114270.

I’m very tempted to switch just for lumed numerals, which has been the most glaring issue with the old 14270. The new movement is an added bonus (the old movement is very reliable so no complaints there). And I personally don’t care the dollar value of vintage because I never purchased my 14270 as an “investment” but as a functional timepiece, this the temptation to switch.

I have the 114270. I'm playing around with the idea of getting a new one...but will probably end up not pulling the trigger.

I have my name down on the new one, and a Rolex serviced 114270.
It will depend. If they had carried the matte dial over from the 39mm, I would do it for sure if I could get reasonable $ for the 114270. However with the gloss dial and apparently very similar hand sets between the 114270 and the new one, I’m not sure there will be enough of a visual difference on the wrist to justify the upgrade - I actually really like the old bracelets. |

Here's a harder question. Should I sell my 214270 Mark 2 for the new 36mm?
I think the 36mm will fit better and have better proportions of course, but man, that watch was only in production for 4 years. in 25 years I may hate myself if I sell. |

I think if I were getting one from scratch then I might go for the new one over the old just because it's probably slightly better as a daily wearer given more modern stuff in it.
But given I alreay have a 114270 and I don't think I would switch, just seem too much of a hassle to sell the old one and get a new one which looks very similar. I bet it's going to be hard to buy as well given steel professional rolexes, so good luck finding one... I like the new movement, better clasp and lume but mine still keeps +3s per day and the 114270 had solid end links and super luminova, so not really that much of a change. 14270, I can see perhaps a stronger case but even then the vintage lume might be preferred by some. I am just glad mine has no rehuat engraving as I guess that would now be a quirk. |

I think the 36mm will (should/hope) be easier to get, with (assuming) the new era of bigger watches.

Interested to see the case difference and the dial differences. I guess the main reason to hold on to a 14270 is for the old school drilled lugs (for those that have the older version of the ref!)

I tried getting a new 36mm OP since they launched year but still waiting! There is still like a 30% premium on them grey market... I would think the explorer should be a bit more popular than the OP especially not much difference in price.

I hope everyone knows that the 114270/14270 isn't really 36mm. It's about 35mm and wears a lot like a 34mm. That thing is tiny. I think Rolex got the Exp I right this time with a true 36mm.

Thing is, between the 114270, my DJ36 and my 16570, they basically all have the same nice vintage dial size, give or take. I've got a nice frisbee if I want to go in that direction, but I chuck it around with my boys on the green. |

I agree that this one would be a great daily watch. Comfortable, modern build quality, and reasonable MSRP. Looking forward to picking one up at some point...but only if I can get it from an AD.

Don’t think I’d part with my 114270 but will rather add the new varient to my collection. There’s no such thing as having too many Explorers!

Personally, it's hard to make a case for the older model. If you have it already, sure but if you are a new buyer you are getting basically the same watch but with a ton of extra build quality. If you have a holes model of the older version or tritium, you have something more unique but the more modern iterations are essentially a downgrade over this. |

And the dial on the 114270 is larger than the dial on the sub, gmt, explorer2, and Daytona from the same era |

I am looking forward to the side by side comparisons to come. Maxi hands (think 5 digit sub LV and yachtmaster) and matte dial would have made the new Explorer perfect. I’ll probably wind up with one. |

Old 36mm Explorer (14270) vs new 36mm Explorer (124270)

This would also be the main reason for me, but I doubt that I will sell my 114270 (graduation present from my father) to get the 124270. I am interested in knowing if the new Chromalight dial and hands fit in the 114270, though. This would be amazing (would keep the originals, of course!). |

Have a birth year 14270. I still prefer the case of the 14270, but wouldn't mind getting the new bracelet

Put my name up for the new one, but the AD could not even promise that it would be my ‘turn’ within the next year and a half. Will not sell the old one, though, as it was my first Rolex.
Moreover, the other current sports models are simply too large for my wrist, and have not been able to find a 5-series GMT Master/II from a reputable (eu based) seller for a reasonable price, so would not even theoretically forgo any other watch by doubling up on the ExpI, which i love. |

Interesting. I didn’t know that. I’m definitely really anxious to try on the new 36mm Explorer even though my 39mm is just a few months old. I’m also anxious to see the true measurements of the new one. What if it’s actually 37.3 for example. That’s a big difference. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
