The digitizing of news

I am a dying breed. Most days I am not working I walk up to the neighborhood coffee shop, buy a ... I realize this may be hard to believe... but I buy a NEWSPAPER!!! I actually read it too... Today, a few millennials (?). Gen Z(?). Hell I don’t know, young people looked at me as if I were a brontosaurus. And I kind of understand. The news, sports, seemed as if it were six months old, I already knew everything in there, having seen it on TV or my Ipad or phone, I wonder how long it will be before newspapers disappear?

I have to go now, my horse and buggy are waiting.

For timely information, printed and distributed material is inefficient (and wastes resources imho).

newspapers don't have hyperlinks... how are you supposed to check sourcing and reference material?

Love newspapers. However, on line is the way to go for me and I can't imagine my routine without reading them all everyday.

I love newspapers.

I started working as a paperboy at around 8 or 10 years old and on Saturdays I worked right beside the press inserting stuff into the papers. When I was around 21 I got a job selling advertising for the same paper and befriended the staff photographer and he let me watch him do darkroom work, which directly led me to pursue portrait photography full time which I did for 40 years.

I can still smell the newspaper/ink if I close my eyes.

Although I read books on iPad/Kindle I still prefer to read the news from newspapers and still subscribe to about 6 magazines.

There is a genuine nostalgia for me with this dying media, dirty fingers and all.

I always loved the newspaper, but here in Tucson, it's simply not worth buying anymore. We've gone from a thriving, two paper town prior to the net, to a single paper town today, and that single paper is just a shell of what it once was.

Guessing, however, this isn't a narative exclusive to Tucson.

You're preaching to the choir Paul.

Our business was manufacturing newspaper boxes for many many years. From about 1987 -2000 we could not keep up. Building boxes for free and paid newspapers and real-estate magazines across the US. 2 plants that ran 24-7. At our peak we built about 50000 boxes in one year. That year alone , I had one customer that was expanding into 37 major markets and needed 750-1000 boxes per market.

Every year since about 2000 and on, our sales dropped to the point now where its just a "sideline" product line for us.

Because every city and town had a newspaper, I traveled all over the US, doing conferences and visiting customers. Lots of fun but exhausting too.

News paper readership is a fraction of what it was back in its heyday and they've really struggled to monetize their content.

I still like the tactile feel of reading a paper and do so every Saturday morning. I walk to my local store (their used to be a coin operated vending box) and buy the paper. Its kind of a ritual. I realize it's coming to an end though.

You might recognize this our most famous box. Back in the day its how you researched homes for sale

You know Brian, that is a scene in my memory, but today, the new generation would ask what all those boxes filled with paper were for.

I guess I’m a bit out dated too. I love sitting and reading magazines on my back porch. The issue lately is that it seems that fewer and fewer are printed and stocked in stores. It’s hard to find much these days. The newspapers here also have almost no content, they really aren’t worth it. I’ve been finding myself just grabbing free local papers as much as anything lately.

I'll always miss the sight of going downstairs in the morning and finding my dad sitting at the dinner table with a cup of coffee and the newspaper...

Agreed. My favorite part about reading physical newspapers is Big Brother can’t track my location, interests, personal info, friends' info, search history, etc…

I subscribe to 3 newspapers and 32 magazines. Paper is far more efficient, easier on the eyes and no BS ads in my face. Nothing beats the feel of flipping through the pages of the newspaper in the morning. I can read the entire paper in a fraction of the time it would take me to click through it.

Digital subscription now but love it when I get my hands on a print version. And whenever I can on vacation I grab a local print paper.

Loved the real estate ad books, we would flip through them during breakfast whenever we went out.

Don’t feel bad Paul. I buy the newspaper every day of the week.
I despise reading the news on my iPad or phone.
My ritual is to get up early to buy the newspaper, start reading from the back (always sports first) while having my 1st cup of coffee.
Then I walk the dog, come back to my 2nd cup of coffee while reading the newspaper from the front this time.
That’s my routine and I’m sticking to it!

IDK, but your better off. The constant clicking and page scrolling are reducing people's attention span in a big way and fast. Not to mention the other things to click on to get the dopamine blast. When on vacation, if i read the news, it only comes from an actual news paper.

It's easier to work the crossword puzzles in newspapers than it is on smartphones or tablets.

I used to do crosswords in pencil but switched to a Sharpie because its easier to see on the tablet screen...

by the way, what do you use to get Sharpie ink off of a tablet screen?

I remember getting the paper delivered and reading the sports section every morning over breakfast before getting on the school bus.

I like digital news for its at-your-fingertips. What I miss about print is there was a different level of journalism; it was a craft and there was a mastery of words. There was also overtones that carried over to keep loyal readers engaged.

In my opinion there is a difference between journalism vs online reporting.

I have had a newspaper in the house since I was old enough to remember my father and grandfather sitting every morning reading one. I kept up the tradition until a few years ago when my local newspaper jacked the rates through the roof and would not work with me on the price. I canceled and thought I would miss it and sign back up when the rates got better. Funny thing happened though, I moved on and once I got over the ritual of the morning paper, replaced by my tablet and computer, I am not going back.

To meet you halfway, there’s always the digital version of the print with turning pages and all. I use it sometimes as the layout is familiar and you can zoom in and out. You can also tap the story and the online layout will pop up.
