Daytona service

My old Daytona 116520 must be in much needed service, chrono pushers became a bit sticky, and i haven’t serviced in a decade. Rolex official dealer offered to polish the watch together with service, shall i get it polished? Watch is meant to stay with me “forever”…

How much shall i expect to pay for it? Do you have any experience at this regard?

Thanks a lot to whoever will share his experience with me

If you bought your Daytona brand new and it has been never polished before. I would not polish it. After it has been repolished it doesn’t look exactly like factory (especially the lugs). Plus a repolished metal bezel on a Daytona looks always bad.

A service at the RSC (Not your local AD shop) will end with your watch being returned to you looking and behavng like a new watch.

It will also have a new warranty.

They will give you a quote before they start working on it - it will be hard to tell until they open it up. My husband just had a Daytona serviced that he had inherited and it was absolutely beat to hell but still ran. It was $4k all in because a few parts needed to be replaced in addition to the service/repair/cleaning. I don’t think it had been serviced in almost 20 years.

I get mine polished every decade or so when I have them serviced. It comes back looking new. Some collectors want an unpolished model when they’re buying, especially for vintage pieces. If you’re looking to just wear the watch and not sell, then it comes down to your preference. I personally like the fact it comes back looking like a new watch.

If it's the Dealer offering to refinish your watch, I might pass. Many times they power finish everything and it takes a very experienced hand to keep the contours correct. I'm not opposed to refinishing, but I want it done right.

Might help to talk to their watchmaker who is doing the job.

Should be in the 1K range for the standard overhaul.

Don't polish it, take TONS of high resolution pictures. Make sure you can zoom and see the details.

I would not polish the watch. I would also just send it in directly to Rolex and skip the middleman. I have not serviced a Daytona for a lot of years but it was $1400 for a basic service with no issues 12-15 years ago.

I had a great experience using RSC to service/polish my Datejust II, it came back like brand new and I was very happy with the result. I've worn the hell out of this watch for 8-9 years straight and it picked up lots of dings and dents, I was very impressed with what RSC had done. With that said, I would polish all my other watches including the Daytona when the time comes.

Wow…I can’t tell from the pic of the “after”, but to me it looks like the contours/edges of the case have not been rounded at all and look perfect. Do you have pics from any other angle, and which RSC did you use?

If you plan to keep it forever, then have RSC polish it- it will look brand new, and that's a great feeling. The "don't polish" crowd are fanatical. I understand not letting a hack have at it, but RSC know what they're doing.

This. I don’t get the anti-polish obsession. Most of the watches I have owned over the last 30 years have been touched up at one time or another and I’ve never had a bad experience.

I'd pass on the polish unless there were significant scars on your watch that bother you. A watch (especially a Rolex) is meant to be worn and enjoyed. Scratches come with wearing. If I really was so inclined to polish, I'd only allow Rolex to do the job. Not that they are perfect, but overall I'd have more confidence with Rolex and a RSC or Lititz at min.

Btw I'm not opposed to taking a Cape Cod to the sides of my bracelets and clasps for my Rolex divers (no case though) myself. I wear the divers most, so they see most wear of course. But not for anything major as far as DIY

I’m always in the do polish camp.
Why on earth would anyone want to wear a scratched up watch?
Surely you want looking at it’s best and like new, does anyone ever suggest not repairing/respraying a scratched up car!

This !! You should never ever ever polish a Daytona bezel, whitegold or steel, doesn’t matter. Polished Daytona bezels look horrible but most people just notice that when seen side by side. Have it replaced at RSC if scrathed up to badly. SS bezel will cost you 300€, whitegold 1400€

Unpolished :

(Just even lightly)polished :
