Rolex References That Have Grown On You Over Time

One of my favorite things about being a Rolex aficionado is seeing how my opinion changes over time on certain references — sometimes for the worse, but often for the better.

Take the 116710LN GMT. When I first laid eyes on this all-black GMT, I thought it was a snoozefest. It didn’t have the characteristic bi-colored bezel that, to me, is the signature trait of the Rolex GMT. Over time, though, I’ve really grown to appreciate this reference. It has virtually all of the attributes that have made the Rolex Submariner Date such an iconic watch — the full black bezel, all black dial, the oyster bracelet, etc. while still retaining the extremely useful GMT function. In short, it has the widely appreciated aesthetics of the Submariner without also being seen on every other wrist. I tend to agree with those who think this GMT is a future classic, and it has really grown on me.

Anyone else had their opinions change on one more references over time?

Great question.

For me, the YM40 has grown on me. Awaiting a new dial color to pull the trigger.

And, YG Oysterquartz Day-Date has also gotten more appealing over time.

Happened to me with the 14060M.

My father wanted to give me a Rolex as a graduation present and I chose the Explorer 114270. Some relatives kept on telling me to go for the Submariner, but I did not like it.

Fast forward 15 years and I started looking at the 14060M wit different eyes until…

I still have my Explorer and will keep it for ever.

Not particularly reference but anything with Roman Numerals.

In my early 20's I didn't care for RN dials at all, it always felt a little feminine and dated...

...wasn't until I went on a hunt for a 18238 President and tried one out with the White Roman dial which really sparked joy for me. It was.. pure class.

Now I'm waiting for a 126200 White Roman that I paid deposit for a few weeks ago

The ever rose GMT in TT or Full gold

Never caught my attention initially but the full RG is easily the best or 2nd best behind the meteorite

Its really stunning.

Not my image but this one

YM for me. Never even considered it until I tried one on. I now own the SS Rhodium and the Everose OF…
I was also never a fan of the Daytona, but they are slowly growing on me…

The current no date sub. Held off in 5 digit era. Held off on first 6 digit due to fat lugs.

There are heavier hitting watches, and yet this one remains so elegant.

Sky Dweller. I thought it looked awkward, ugly even. Then I discovered how clever and user friendly it was. It took time, but it is now my favourite reference by a long way.

When I first started to get into watches, I thought the 5 digit models were to small, and I liked the heft of the 6 digit models, as I have big wrists.

Today that is completely reversed. I love the old school look of the 5 digit models, and the only reference I love from the current lineup is the Daytona, but that ref also kept the smaller form factor.
Maybe also a Pepsi, but other than that there are not really any current 6 digits that talks to me. I would like to add a 5 digit SD though

Explorer ii … partly because I was running out of Rolex models I didn’t or hadn’t already owned but it’s a great watch, have the white dial. Find it more of a winter watch than a summer watch.

The 214270 Explorer. I overlooked it for years, then it suddenly started to grow on me. And grow, and grow, until I finally asked my AD for one around Dec 2020... at which point he told me they hadn't had one in for quite a while, and then it got discontinued before I managed to get one!

Air King 116900 , disliked it with a passion, until I saw the Blooodhound LSR cockpit pictures and saw the instrumentation. Started to like it and now I actually love that dial.

Milgauss Z Blue. If I didn't have a blue dial DJ41 on oyster, I would be on the hunt.

Two tone watches have grown on me quite a bit. Before I was never really into the Sub but now I find myself really wanting one.

Back in the 90's I drooled over the YG white dial YM. Also at the time had no interest in the pepsi gmt. Now I'm not in to anything YG and love the look of the pepsi, old and new!

The one I grew to love was the Explorer. In my younger days I gravitated to more flashy and complicated watches. This is until I bought my first vintage watch years ago. The simplicity and elegance of a simple 3 hand watch. After saving my money and selling off most of my collection I bought a 214270 and can truly say that this will be my one nice (greater than $1000) watch for many years to come.
