Rolex Explorer on a Stuntman

I've been blogging with Jake on "Jake's Rolex World" for several years. Most posts on that blog--running strong for 14 years--are about celebrities and athletes choosing Rolex as their timepieces. It's fluff, I'll admit it; we never talk about case sizes or movements. It's like People Magazine for Rolex.

I'm especially proud of the story I wrote yesterday as the subject is not a celebrity. He is the face you never see. A professional Hollywood stuntman for big movie productions and A-list actors -- Charlie Sheen, Brad Pitt, George Clooney -- wears a 1967 Explorer daily, including during his stunts. (And you know you're tough when Chuck Norris calls you to be his stunt double.)





Anyways, for some of us who debate -- internally or on this forum -- whether to baby our watches, this, I thought, was refreshing. And I wanted to write about it. Thank you for indulging me.

While I myself like to wear my watch while doing a lot of adventurous activities, some ppl cannot afford to bang up a watch that costed them $7k plus.

When all is said and done, my daily wearer, the watch that I choose when things are going to get rough, the watch that I don’t mind if it gets wet or muddy, the one I grab to go into the garden or on long hikes, the one that I stuck on a rubber strap so that it can handle anything, ... is a ‘04 Pepsi 16710.
Kind of like a Sub, but I like the GMT function, to be able to travel. Man, I trust that watch in every situation!

Guy I follow on instagram is a Hollywood stunt man and wears Rolex/Tudor and other brands. Cool guy! Right now he’s chronicling his search for a 16610 he lost in a lake in the 90s. He’s probably a member here.

Fun thread, thanks, OP.

Interesting that Charlie Sheen gave him that particular Explorer, obviously choosing a vintage reference. I recall reading that he’s a watch guy…and looks like he put a bit f thought into that particular gift.

Sheen went through a rough time a few years ago and came off badly in social media. I don’t know his story. But, this gift suggests a positive facet, a generosity and thoughtfulness, that’s less well known.

I don’t suppose the inscription on the case back will hurt value much.

I recently bought the 36mm Explorer and wouldn’t hesitate to wear it in any environment. I like that it’s a rugged watch without being obviously a “sports” watch. I’ll pass on any rocket flights. The watch can handle it, but not me!

Thank you for sharing your article Danny. It is very refreshing to see Rolex watches are being used for their intended purposes. Outstanding read and I’m glad to know the Explorer can handle pretty much anything thrown its direction.

Yeah, that's a 14270, so it would have been '90s'ish.
