Collectibility of a modern Sub
My AD said that the sub is going to a ceramic bezel very soon... how collectible will the current Subs be in 10-15 years? He stated that they are one of the higher produced watches in Rolex's line over recent years. I was think of getting one to put aside as an investment or give to my son in 15 years... It would not compete with my others for wrist time.
Also, which one has been more rare/desirable, LV, Bluesy, other? I am not a TT fan. |

I purchased my son a 2006 GMT after he showed interest in the style and color of the bezzel.
I do not particularly care for the LV (you can always buy a bezel to match the style) vice versa if you owned the LV, you can always change it to black. A bluezy is a must for dressier, casual, whatever. You really can not go wrong with this series... Ask JJ... |

IMHO . . .
Great watch but with the high production numbers, I can't see it as an investment for the future from a financial perspective. However, as an investment for your child's future enjoyment . . . |

No modern Rolex is collectable IMO.

As a gift for your son couldn't be better....I gave my son one.
As an investment.....the current Submariner is an old reference, even by Rolex standards. The reference has been around since circa 1989 and despite a few minor changes (tritium dial to luminova for one) there are so many examples out there I have my doubts. If I had to pick based on your criteria the LV would be my choice. Made since 2003 it at least has far fewer numbers than it's all black counterpart and the combination of the maxi-dial and classic case may raise an eyebrow in the future......who can say. |

What do you think might be a better watch that will have a "WOW factor" 10 years from now in the $8K price range?

I have a tritium faced 16610 and the only reason I am not going to upgrade the face is because of the sentimental value of the whole package. I really doubt it will be worth any additional "vintage $$$" as they are pretty common.
That doesn't mean it will be worth less though, they still hold their value pretty well over the years! |

Just look at the current increases in price, think 10 years down the line!
You can not go wrong! Ask your son which one he likes now, you may be surprised! He will forget about it! |

I don't think the modern Sub Date will have much collector value in the next few years, there are just too many of them. Now as a gift for someone down the road that could be a great idea. If increase value is what you are after some of the other Rolex tool watches might be a better pick. EXP II, Daytona, some of the GMT's, Sea Dweller or the Rolex Sub(non date) IMO they have a better up side then the Sub Date. In the end it is anybody's guess.

Not collectible in 10-15 years. Probably will be collectible in 50 years.

I would think that the Rolex Submariner is the most mass produced Rolex in their history. I do not see any modern Sub becoming "collectible" until the year 2096.
But that is just my never to be humble opinion.

I did the same thing -- I picked up second Daytona to give to my 5 year old when he graduates college etc. I am sure I won't be able to afford one at that time.

collectable, yes. investment to make money, no.
I will continue to buy in the future if I like a new reference and it will be collectable to me. but these modern references will not be sought after by collectors like red sub or double red SD in the future.

Have to agree there afraid Rolex watches from say the cal 31XX series just forget it, to many millions of them in this world today.
Without doubt its the DJ thats the most mass produced Rolex but would think the sub is second for sure.

I was talking watches with a buddy of mine over the weekend. He pulled out his box and papers for his P series Exp II. He got it in March 01 from an AD for just over $3000. Quite a lot of increase since then no? |

Yes the Sub is a high production watch. One of the best sellers, but take a look at so many Subs that are now out of production, check out the price.
Not cheap at all. A 1975 Sub today would be around $6000 and if it is a Red Sub, about $10,000 at least and a double Red sub - you guess the price. Original price at that time (from my memory) was about $600 to $750 in Hong Kong. This is not to say the current Sub will go up in value, but emperical data of the watch does indicate a positive trend over the next decade. |

Any of the sport Rolexes will hold it's value against the dollar in the future. But my bets are on the current non date submariner COSC. Not many made, and if the rumers are correct and it's discontinued it may become very rare indeed. Plus it's just a great watch, either way you can't lose.

I didn't get my watch as an investment, but I also expect it likely that in a few years I could sell it without loss. These things do hold value well, especially purchased pre-owned.
But in the end I have it because I love wearing it, I don't think the Sub is the right Rolex if you are trying to make investment grade profits. |
