Buying a Ref you don't like to build purchase history

So as the title states, has anyone ever bought a reference that they didn't really like to further deepen your purchase history?

Recently got a call from a fairly new AD about a DJ41 and I purchased it without hesitation as I see it as building my purchase history with them.


I have a DJ41 already, but my thought process buying this new DJ was:

1. Didn't want to seem unappreciative to my AD for giving me a call about a new model that came in.

2. Won't lose value as most SS models are selling for way over MSRP.


Still haven't decided if I'll keep the watch long term or sell it later on but didn't really see the down side to purchasing it. Has anyone been in the same situation?

Has anyone ever bought a watch just to help them get further on the list for a grail watch?

You are not getting the watch you want.

You are taking the opportunity for someone who does want that watch away.

It's just not right on any level. IMO

I understand this completely, but how else does one build a purchase history in this environment? I would love to sell it to someone for retail price if there was a safe way to go about it..

At this point, since my old AD where I had a great relationship is no longer a Rolex dealer and I have zero purchase history at my new AD, I'll take whatever they offer me. I have given them a small list of what I'm interested in.

I wouldn't buy it if I didn't see myself wearing it. If it was for a gift down the road for a family member, maybe.

I do not- I have passed on some "hot pieces". Only buy what you like.

I'm sure it took some purchase history to even be offered the "hot pieces". I'm in a totally different/new situation

Ask your AD.

Only they will know.

They could think they hooked you up with a watch and you won’t get another for a long time.

They could see you as a good buyer who should get more references on their wish list.

They could see you as the guy they can dump low demand models on quickly.

Nobody here knows. You AD should be honest with you if you ask.

If you’re actually just trying to get hot models to flip they probably won’t help you even with a modest recent purchase history. Because they know you’ll stop buying other things as soon as you score a big flip.

slippery slope, buy too many rolex and you wont get offered the hot pieces. If you see yourself wanting a DJ41 down the road, then fine, but then demand (and wait) for what you really want next.

Don't buy every "garbage" piece they offer you because you then become the guy who vacuums up the lower demand pieces after they called all their A clients who said no. I have 3-4 AD relationships and this is apparently my status at one of them lol. I asked for a Sub and was offered an AK (they even discounted it 5% - this was 2020 - tells you how they felt about moving that piece then). Now I still get offers here and there from this one AD for unpopular DJ configs, TT stuff etc. Never offered anything I ever asked for.

I haven't bought anything other than the AK from them accordingly.

I never had to, luckily. However, it's getting harder these days, so I could do it with a watch I like but don't love, like the DJ41 or DJ36. I could give it a shot, wear it for a while and see if it sticks, in the hope it solidifies my relationship with the AD for a Pepsi.

I have before, and it's really a math question for the most part

You can buy the piece you want on the grey market and know you're going to pay $X premium

Or you can spend $X with your AD and hope to build a relationship that will be fruitful with a little patience

If you're just investing in a one-off piece, the grey market is probably easiest/best, but after you buy a certain number of watches, you'd be better off having built that initial relationship with the AD

I understand why people do it but it kinda sucks for someone who may have been waiting for that DJ41. Hopefully, they didn’t have anyone waiting for yours.

I would say that if I had the $$$ to buy watches I don’t really want, I may do it. I’d like to think I’d try to find someone waiting and sell for my cost.

Yeah I have a few friends that have been waiting and might be interested at cost. It's a dilemma but how can one build purchase history without purchasing?

Turned down first two offers of a DJ 41 but said yes to an Azzuru Blue DJ out of fear the AD would feel I wasn't serious. I finally got the the Wimbledon I wanted in January and plan to trade the Azurru Blue in on a Pepsi or YM 40 Blue Dial next time they call.

Smart. This was actually the second time they offered a DJ. Turned down the first one but took the second one out of the same fear as you.

I wouldn’t but I’m not a msssive risk taker. However, this is my understanding as to become a big fish: buy, buy, buy!

Of course as soon as your dj is no longer worth than msrp bail out!

It's a shame it has come to this...having to kiss the AD's rear just to get on a list. You can always buy the watch that you don't want and flip it while waitng on a watch that you want.

It's the current environment. It is what it is if you want a Rolex these days. Your second sentence is exactly what my post is about.

Technically you could do it and just sell the watches off after taking a hit on price, but it just seems like extreme desperation / last resort type of tactic. Even with doing this you still don't know if it's going to help you unless the AD has confirmed some kind of deal with you. With this said, I'm sure plenty of people are actively doing this. Calculating their loss on the sale in comparison to the gain they make on the hard to get watch - and hoping they come out better off than buying grey.

I have in the past purchased watches I DO want, which did help with getting the hard to get piece. But both watches were wanted and kept.

Have to do a cost analysis on buying a watch you don't really want in the "hopes" of getting one you really want down the line vs. buying from a grey and getting what you want asap without all the AD games.

I wonder if the size of the dealer contributes to this? My AD/Boutique has a waiting buyer for almost every model variation. I ask one at a time for a particular reference and have never gotten a call offering up some other random piece.

Good advice and I've done just that with both AD's that are pretty new to me.

A good AD will be honest and if they are very good as the one's I am dealing with they would not even hint at buying something other than something you love.

I have a past history with one of them and that was why I was lucky enough to get a 126610LV as a first purchase. In a combination of loving another watch and towards 'good manners' I picked up something else when I got the 126610LV.

My next hope is a 116519LN and the fact I have bought a couple of other watches other than Rolex clearly helps make this possible.

It's all very individual and blanket statements by the peanut gallery, are more about personal venting than the reality of the marketplace.

Don't hate the game or the player, if you can navigate the waters to make yourself happy, then you find your comfort level.

It can be a stomach turner and a very bad experience with the wrong AD's. That much is for sure.

Tbh, I'd rather not. Though AD games can be frustrating, it feels extremely rewarding to get the Ref you want MSRP.
