Trading new for 5 digits

I have a 2022 Rolex Rootbeer 126711CHNR. It's a beautiful watch, just stunning looking.
I have a 2005 Rolex Kermit 16610LV and a 1998 Rolex Explorer 14270 "Swiss Only". Love them both.

Honestly, when I wear the Rootbeer I feel a bit like I have handcuffs on. It's large and quite heavy. But it is sooooo nice looking

Now, I could trade it for:
  • 1998 Explorer II 16570 "Swiss Only" + Papers
  • 1999 GMT 16710 Coke "Swiss Only" + Papers

I do love the 5 digits and how comfortable they are on the wrist... but it seems crazy to trade the new watch for older ones from a product quality, warranty, A/R coating, yadda yadda pov..

What do you think? or

I love the idea of possibly kick start a collection of "SWISS" only watches with these 3...

Do it and don’t look back. The 5 digits have a charm and feel on the wrist that the new models cannot replicate. I know exactly what you mean about the handcuffs, especially sport models on oyster. I never use the glide lock or easy link, and the old smaller clasps are much easier under a cuff/desk diving. Try a 16170 on jubilee and you will love it.

I personally wouldn't. It's nice to have a 5-digit and a 6-digit BECAUSE they do wear so differently. I love that the Hulk feels different on my wrist than my GMT II.

I would find it somewhat boring to have all 5's or all 6's (there's a reason I got rid of my 16800 - it wore too similarly to my 16710), but I guess that's reflected in my signature line.

Trading new for 5 digits

I traded a six-digit Sub for a five-digit Sub, and in the process added a five-digit Explorer II and GMT to my collection too. I am over the moon with my choice, apart from the loss of the Glidelock bracelet…so I bought an extra one for my five-digit Sub on the occasions I'd like to wear it on that rather than a strap.

At first, honestly I was against 5 digits, because they're simply not as robust as the 6 digit. However, after owning the 16710, I'm a convert. There's something really awesome about their under-the-radarness, their lack of hype x new moneyness, and their perfect proportions.

I flirted with this for years, owning a 116610ln. Of course it is a great watch, but felt unnaturally large on the wrist. 5dig, in pics, had me wanting to trade.

Though for their time, the 5digs were made extremely well, the build quality feels like it is sub par when compared to the modern line up (it is 100% not subpar), but just has a much more dainty feel to it for any 6 dig owner.

Instead, I went 214270+BB58.

Agree with some others, owning 5+6 digits is really the way to go, but if you can’t… I’d stick with what you have or go with a modern jubilee Pepsi, which from what I hear, is very comfortable.

Your current collection is more diverse and the CHNR is a stunner. Personally, if I had a 5 digit LV Sub, I would hardly wear a 5-digit GMT or Explorer.

So, no, I would not do that trade.

Sold my 166713 and replaced it with a 16613.
Have not looked back.
So a ‘yes’ from me!

I get it. The older models have some give so you don't need to adjust them. They adjust on their own. But on the subs the dive extension sucks.

I love the CHNR and I like the larger size of the 6-digits, but I don't think you are crazy at all to trade it if you don't personally love it.

99.99% of this isn't about technical capability but rather personal preference and emotions.

The 16710 is a legend. You already know what the dimensions will be like if you have a 16610LV. If that is what you prefer, you should go for it, IMHO.

I must have a weird wrist or a problem with water weight, as I use it daily in the summer and use three different positions depending on my activities. I don't think I would be able to wear my watch in many situations without it.

What is there not to like I have a lot of GMTs as I travel a lot, my original GMT is 22 years old and she is still 6 seconds fast as the day I got her.

The ceramic insert and clasp made me forget 5 digits. I could never go back to the old watches with the exception of a nice vintage 1675.

Do what makes you happy and don’t overthink it, it’s supposed to be fun

I'd own all 5 digit iterations of subs and GMTs, if it wasn't for that bracelet clasp. I can't get past it, so I have to stick with modern.

The 6 digits are the better watch, but the 5 digits are the better watch for me.

Also, it depends on the reference. The 116500 wears like a 16520 in proportions. As an owner of a 116610LN, it is an upgrade technically to any 5 digit sub I own, but it isn’t as charming and fun to wear.

I appreciate them all for what they are and aren’t, but if I had to keep one, it’s a 5-digit Sub.

I'd trade for a 16710. I am of the opinion that no collection is complete without one.

6digit build quality is amazing, they look amazing, they wear amazing, however I agree with you that they are heavy and adding to that, they are shiny and they don't age with you.

5digit build quality is still very good, they look amazing, they wear amazing, they are light, but most importantly they have a soul and feeling that 6digits don't have, maybe because of the shiny ceramic bezels not aging.

If you wan't best of both worlds, then steel bezel sports may be an option. Exp is robust but light, ExpII is although heavy wears flat and comfortable and preserve that aging soul.

If you can get a bit of a cash on top of the trade, I would do the CHNR -> Coke + ExpII trade, but only if the ExpII is polar. Then you can have the Sub+GMT+ExpII 5 digit trifecta!

I’d take the 5 digit movement over the new generation any day of the week. Reliability seems to have gone down with the new movements.

This trade appeals to me. I don't know about the financial parity of the trade, but I do know that I'd get more joy from wearing 5-digit Exp II and Coke more than a modern Root Beer.

The 1675 GMT and 16800 Sub are impeccable.

They represent what Rolex was for the best part of 50-60 years.

Whatever you do (and only you can decide) keep the CHNR...it´s such a gorgeous watch. I'd love one even though I have no need for the GMT complication. As it is I'm more than happy with my old 5-digit Submariner!
