Be careful out there TRF

The first 4 minutes of this video underline why I stopped taking my watches on vacation and why owning luxury timepieces in current times sadly isn’t what it used to be.

I’m definitely not injecting doom and gloom into the forum, but just be careful out there guys.

it's usually where you see expensive watches all over the place so i guess it gives a false sense of security, but then again you have to get through security to get in. just gotta be self aware and not let people touch you i guess. an event like f1 miami is filled with rich people because the cheapest tickets were around $1000. i feel like it would be one of the safer places to wear something nice

Of course there is no link between the two. Just found it "funny" to have them side by side in my subscription list on youtube... They released the videos at the same time...

I admittedly watched for too long. However, the only thing stolen in that video was your click and your attention.

I refuse to travel with an expensive watch. The thing is, you can't be sure of every situation. There may be times you may need to take off the watch and leave it at the hotel, or maybe you'll be caught in a sketchy neighbourhood. airport security may require you to take it off... Just too many factors to worry about.

What’s the definition of expensive?

Desperate people have been known to do extreme things for pocket change

Expensive can be a sliding scale without rhyme or reason

Perhaps “expensive” means… it would be very impactful to you financially if you lost that time piece.

To your point… it’s all relative.

It’s like the old timezone sales forums…
One forum for watches under $5k and one sales forum for watches over $5k…

With all the price inflation, I wonder if it should be set to 10k now LOL…

Insure and be aware of your surroundings + use hotel safe deposit. Taking 3 watches - OF Daytona, Lange 1, Omega Speedmaster (beater) to big island tomorrow :).

Me neither but it is pretty cool that Serena Williams can play an entire tennis match with one and not blow up the movement. I bet if she wore a Rolex or any other brand watch the movement would be toast. I bet the second hand wouldn’t even make it through one of her serves. Lol

That race in Miami was nothing more than a bunch of wealthy young men flexing way over priced and hyped watches. It was a thieves dream convention. I would’ve worn my G-Shock had a attended.

I don’t know brother. I don’t think Watch thieves are desperate and looking for pocket change. These are professionals. That’s what they do for a living.

We are headed on a 2 week vacation to Europe. As much as I would like to take one of my nice watches and capture some cool pics it is just not worth it. I think I am going to buy and take a Apple Watch. Once we get back if it starts collecting dust I will give it to my son.

RM seems more like a marketing specialist than a watch company imho. Their 'marketing team' is hard at work promoting the constant / ongoing theft of their watches.

Best bet IMHO is to never get or wear an RM watch because of their reputation for being stolen... often. Be safe out there everyone, you never know when thieves will harm you!

Serena is an AP brand ambassador. Wears them during matches, believe it or not! (Not saying she hasn’t worn RM’s!) It is quite astonishing how robust the RM movements seem to be

We are of the like mind - save for the hotel safe part!

Much like your TRF name, we are crusing to Alaska tomorrow and I'm taking 3 watches as well. I bring a nice watch (or 3) on all of our trips. They're all insured and I paid enough for them that I want to be able to enjoy them wherever I go. I'm well aware of my surroundings and I'm not showy while wearing my watches.

If I never brought my watches on vacation, they would just sit in the box. That's definitely not what I bought them for! Just last night, my son was like "Dad, bring the Pepsi"...I told him I had other plans already.

Not really that impressive imho.

Wore my Bell&Ross 03-92 with ETA movement for years while racing Formula 2000, loading/unloading the gear, changing the Hewland LD200 gearing, etc. and she's never been serviced in over a decade and still keeps great time.

There are MANY very robust timepieces out there, including Rolex of course. Have taken the Bvlgari Octo FS on off-road bicycle days and she's been fine too. Yup, a world record super ultra-thin that's durable. In fact even the Czapek Monochrome White has had a two bike rides so far and is fine.

Mechanical timepieces, well-made ones, are VERY durable IMHO. RM's marketing department likes to use durability as one of their schemes, yet the fact is many brands are very durable if you give them a chance to prove themselves

Yes, they can be violently stolen a dozen times and continue ticking. Even the complications, such as displaying erotic terms at random, will continue to serve you well for mugging after mugging.

How told you RMs survive the matches?

No one did.

Rafa's has broken several times. Serena's is likely the same.

Before I knew it was probably not the best idea I played golf with my old speedy all the time and never noticed an issue. Definitely not something I'd recommend or do myself anymore but they can definitely handle a lot more than some might think.

Definitely not a gold watch.
Gonna keep the AP and Pateks at home.
Will also depend which country I go to.

Ideally, an Apple watch that i can throw around and not worry.
And if I bring a luxury watch, i'll only bring 1, and never take it off. At most it would be my Rolex YM
