Slightly rusty hands, slightly over-polished, but beautiful because of both.

I’ve seen a rose gold watch, about 20 years old, which has slightly rusty or discoloured batons and hands (should an 18k gold watch rust?), which have enriched the rose gold colour into oranges and pinks. It’s a well known brand, so servicing should be straightforward, but I’ve never bought a rusty watch, with a slightly over-polished bezel. And I’m considering buying this because of the damage, which makes it look beautiful. I know that personal appeal, is everything, but have you ever bought slight decay and loved it, because of the decay?

Patina can be a wonderful look, but rust is not patina. Pics could help

Rust is FeO2 (iron oxide), can't happen on a gold watch. This type of patina is a slow reaction of the copper in the Au alloy and is common in vintage pieces.

Actually, rust is hydrated iron(III) oxide (Fe2O3. nH2O), and under wet conditions may include iron(III) oxide-hydroxide (FeO(OH)). "FeO2" does not exist.

Thanks for all the replies. Here are some pictures. Is it likely that the colours have changed since 2004, when the watch was first sold? And is the colour degradation ominous, signaling decay. I just don’t want corrosion - bits falling off as batons and hands disintegrate, hence the rust concern, but I love the colours.

Why post something that's Omega related in the Rolex/Tudor forum.

Understood, and I won’t make a habit of it, but I was hoping to learn about the decay risk with rose gold watches. Maybe you can help? Thanks.

Stunning piece. Can you share the reference or model number? I would leave it as-is.

Am I the only one that doesn’t see any “decay” or “rust”?
