🍎 what’s your definition of box & papers?

🍎 WHAT’S YOUR DEFINITION OF BOX & PAPERS?

If you look for Rolexes on the secondary market at all, you have likely seen advertisements for Rolexes that come with “Box and Papers”. What does that mean? The truth is the term means different things to different people. In fact, many use the term box and papers, which may just mean the original box and warranty certificate but may mean a complete set. This can cause confusion.

The one thing that cannot be replaced is a Rolex guarantee/warranty document (or card for more recent watches.) Thus, every full set, regardless of who calls it that, includes a guarantee card. It’s the only part of a set that can’t be easily replaced.

Here is a list of other items:

• Box (inner and outer box)
• Original certificate
• Warranty cardholder
• COSC hangtag (Chronometer hangtag)
• Instruction’s manual
• Guarantee manual
• Anchor, if applicable
• Original sales receipt
• Original white paper sleeve
• White hangtag
• Caseback sticker
• Bezel protector
• Other provenance (a term relating to authenticity and proof of it)
• Service records

Did I miss anything? What’s important to you?

I suppose if you’re planning on hanging onto it for the long term and passing it down. Thanks for your comment

I’m not sure about the list, as it’s pretty solid. However, I am sure that no one knows what the future holds; and although one might not need or want what he or she views as superfluous Rolex box and papers right now, one never knows if someone that the person loves or cares about in the future might want or even need those box and papers.

I assume that B+P includes both inner and outer boxes, original warranty card and any service cards. Manual, hang tag and cosc tag.

I think of a Full Set as all the items you mentioned.

"Box and Papers" refers solely to the watch box and warranty/instruction paperwork.

That's Jacek of Tropical Watch, formerly of HQ Milton. That'll be his business number and freely available.

It's all just informal sales jargon, but box & papers can be just a box and the original warranty cert/card. Full set should be whatever the watch came with at point of sale (stores didn't all give out the same stuff so there's no official international standard). If it's box & papers and a booklet and one tag (for example), just list what you have, or say 'box, papers and accessories' or words to that effect.

I have to agree with others the watch is 99% of the consideration. B&P is nice but if it’s overly emphasized I know the asking price will be ridiculous and I don’t display my boxes.

Thanks for the comment. Do you tend to hang on to your watches for the long term or possibly pass them down?

I think box and papers help to reduce the buying/selling of stolen watches…just my 2 cents

I tend to hang on to a permanent 72 and about 30 always in play. I have no family I like or friends so they will go to my private secretary and my biographer.

Btw, lots a respect for your trade and asking the questions openly.

On 5 digits box and papers have a greater chance to be available, but on 4 digits you're gonna be lucky to get a full set.

If one knows what he's doing, I wouldn't pay a premium to get those.

The important document is the RSC/AD service card. It legitimizes the head and keeps you out of trouble.

Caseback stickers were a weird and kind of gross thing years ago, any modern Rolex will be very unlikely to come with one. I have generally kept the basics (boxes, manuals, warranty card) but have never passed along my sales receipt when I’ve sold a watch.

I would say a recent Rolex Service Card with the current owners name and serial number of the watch.

The manual, box and accessories are nice, but can easily be had on the secondary market. Also, I've found that many sell with the incorrect box, hang-tags etc., so if correct accessories are essential, they can be had.

Thanks for the post, beautiful watch.

If you care (I am on the “I do care” camp) what it means, you should ask the seller to be very specific.

Pet peeve is someone scrounging up a used box and wrong year reference booklet and trying to make out like it’s just missing the original warranty paper (card).

To me, I want every piece originally provided, although most ADs won’t give you the bezel protector, coffin, stickers, and even heard some keeping the white hangtag (not cool).

My wife bought me a gift watch recently and it didn’t have the outer white cardboard sleeve. I went back to the AD who gladly provided one for me, but most don’t know to ask for that stuff. They’re just stunned to be getting the watch.

Are you saying the warranty card alone is “box and papers”? How is a plastic card a box? If you mean “what’s important”, the white hang tag cannot be “had”. It is printed with the watch’s serial number, so cannot be replaced and is therefore important.
