Which Datejust do I have?

Hi there,

I bought a pre-owned (circa 1993) Datejust yesterday (my first nice watch!) and wanted to know if someone could give me some details on which model number this is and anything I should know about it. I hate being undereducated!

I know it's a steel Datejust with the Jubilee bracelet and a white gold bezel. That's it. Clue me in, please? [Insert apology for camera phone picture here]

Thanks in advance for your help!

The style of dial is called 'tapestry'.
I believe it is model no. 16234.
The bezel is 'fluted'.

Sorry about that remark lovecartier, didn't mean to come off as a smartass but whatever you paid for it must have been ok in your book, right?

Only at 12:30 and 6:00! I can read it! It's a beautiful dial...and not entirely easy to come by anymore from what I understand.

Well I'm glad you guys all think I picked a good one - the parents didn't. Yet again, their eyes are about 40 years older than mine are ...

When it's hard to read is actually when the hands are below the cyclops more than anything else. It is a pretty damn cool watch though! :) My Dad also claims that both he and my mother used to have Rolexes and that they don't keep good time (he was NOT happy with this purchase decision). I hope he's wrong ...

I heard that they used a wooden tool to make the tapistry dial and that the tool wore out, thus they discontinued it. But for whatever reason, it is too bad they no longer make that dial.

wonderful watch! you can remove the bracelet and get the s/n and case number just to have that info as well. or if you are not comfortable doing that, an AD will do it for you.

congrats again!

Authorized dealer, (in your case the big T:)

You probably have the box and paper with all the info.

Tourneau did not put the serial number on their house papers and gave me a house box. You'd think with that much money I'd get a Rolex box ... I wasn't particularly thrilled with Tourneau but I guess you get what you get and at least I knew the warranty would be valid. Next time (in um... 10 years ...) I'll buy from a better company :)

My mistake, I thought you got it with box and papers.

In that case I would go back to them, have them take the bracelet off and record the serial & model #'s on your receipt.

Doesn't hurt to have it registered for future references, (specially with them..:)

I'll do that when I'm back down there in two weeks. Thanks for the advice. What do you mean by "specially with them"?

Hey - some more questions (thanks for all of the very helpful answers I got):

- Is it normal that at this age the "luminous" hands don't ... luminate anymore?
- I caved in and bought Tourneau's 3 year warranty because my understanding is that the service that needs to be performed every 5-7 years costs about $500 and this will cover it whenever I want it (so if I do it in 3 years, I'm good for about 8-10 at the price of $195). They do use only Rolex parts, right?

- Any way I can get a Rolex box for this thing? BernardWatch.com is a reputable company that appears to sell them but I don't know if having a box from the wrong year is any good?

- Is it true I can take the Rolex to a Rolex Service Center (I live in Manhattan) and have it checked out and get papers for the thing? If yes, is there a fee for that?

Thanks so much again all of you. Love this site. And my Datejust.

It's a beautiful watch.....in twenty years time when you are still wearing it, I'll bet my bottom dollar your Dad admits he was wrong....it is a lot of money to spend on a watch no matter which Rolex you decide on....but it'll still seem like the best money you ever spent in the years to come....

I think I'd have to wear my watch for about 200 years to get my Dad to admit he was wrong. Thanks though!

Anyone have an answer to my new list of questions above?

Yes it's perfectly normal for the lume on your watch to not glow anymore....your dial will say "T SWISS MADE T" at the 6 o'clock position...or maybe "T SWISS T"....or something like that....this indicates a Tritium dial, that's the substance they used for luminous glow, it only lasts around 12 years or so, very very good initially but it doesn't last which is a great shame.....Rolex now use Super Luminova which lasts forever (apparently)....

As for the box and paperwork, it's only really of great importance if you intend selling the watch in the future as it increases the value a bit, service papers will serve as authentication.....if it's your only Rolex when do you intend to use the box????
