Explorer 1016 questions
Greetings all. Fairly new member here.
I just recently purchased an Explorer 1016 which has been my grail watch for years. I absolutely love it but I had some questions about the dial. Apparently it was serviced at some point and it appears as though the lume was removed. It looks like just flat white printing on the dial. I was curious if I bought it in for service to Rolex, would they do anything at all to the dial in terms of re-luming or any other alterations? I’d love a replacement dial, but they are unbelievably expensive. |

Welcome.
Post a photo up please - some of the matte dials have a slightly washed out and 'flat' appearance btw; as you can see below. 1016 dial guide here : https://explorer1016.com/matte/

I have a 1016 with a service dial (etc) and the lume is pretty flat, just looks white to a glance. Many of the watches I see here have much more prominent lume. Pics will tell the tale though

They'll give you a service luminova dial if the lume was replaced.

Rolex refused to service my 1016 unless I agreed to their taking my dial and replacing it with a at-the-time modern dial (with the white gold surrounds on the dial). They claimed that the dial was authentic but damaged, and wouldn’t explain why they thought so. I told them to return the watch.
This was twenty years ago, but I doubt there’s been much change. |

It has changed - they are even more Draconian with their demands!!! I spoke to someone who said that they are now insisting on a new shiny out of keeping bracelet too.....and in his case, keeping his $2500 7206 for their trouble !!
