Shattered datejust 4 days old

I managed to drop my 4 day old watch on marble floor this morning. I immediately took back to my local Rolex store where I purchased it Saturday. Anyone experience a broken watch (see attached photo). It was sent out to repairs today and I’m praying the dial is not damaged. It has diamonds and limited edition dial print. Any thoughts on repair and cost? My second hand was not running after the fall so no glass dragging around dial.

It's doubtful that it damaged the dial, but I would have pulled the crown out to stop it from running. That could damage the hands. All it should need is a new crystaland gasket

It will likely require a full overhaul to ensure no glass shards or pieces are in the delicate movement parts, plus the cost of the crystal.

From previous experience, anytime a watch with a shattered crystal comes in, RSC will perform full movement service. If they spot damage to the dial, they'll recommend a replacement.

I'd expect your estimate to be no less than $1K

If you had any type of insurance coverage on the watch at the time, you may want to look into seeing if it would cover this damage. I suspect most policies would cover the repairs assuming it was insured.

Sales associate did not see scratches on dial but hard to tell under the severely cracked part of the watch! Fingers crossed it’s just the crystal!

If it’s just a crystal that’s about $150. If not….a lot more I’m afraid.

Wife did the same.
If hands and dial are Ok, repair will entail $130 for sapphire and full service.
Figure just shy of $1,000.
If hands and Diamond dial damaged, which was the case with my wife, it came out to just shy of $3,000.
Did you insure it? This would be covered.

I noticed that but realised the poster was new here?

There may have been a delay in the post showing.

What is credit card buyer protection? Details if you know something that may help if it’s an expensive repair!

Some credit cards offer buyer protection for items charged on card for theft or damage.
Contact yours to see if they offer that.

Hard to tell from photo but looks like you may have just damaged the sapphire. Service is needed to remove all fragments from movement.

Ooof! Sorry to see this. But it’ll be fixed and dials rarely suffer damage with this level of gravity damage.

If there’s anything this teaches it’s always have two Rolexeses.

Nasty! Hopefully it’ll just be a precautionary service to make sure there’s no shards in the movement, and a replacement crystal. Good luck!

My datejust also suffered a crystal shattering from the marble floor (while it was on my wrist actually.) it was far more expensive than I thought it would be to repair. Mine was $1400 but it also required additional parts. You will have to talk to a dealer, ideally one with a watchmaker who may be able to give you more insight

Ouch! That's painful to see and I expect it was very painful to witness. Good luck with it.

Unless your insurance company stipulate that you must list itemised valuables with them, the valuables portion of the contents of a home insurance policy might cover this. Mine does up to £15K per unspecified item and £50K total coverage of valuables.

Some higher tier credit cards (AMEX Platinum, Sapphire Reserve, etc) offer purchase protection.

Do you have any existing watch insurance? For example, Chubb offers a grace period of 90 days for new purchases and will be covered at 25% of the total policy amount.
