Shiny Puffer Coat (Canada Goose)

Love them hate them, whatever. I didn't have one and I wasn't looking at getting one of the bigger puffer coats but one of those lite down filled winter coats. You know, one of those coats if you wanted you can actually roll it up and pack it up into one of it's own pockets.

And no Paul, Tumi doesn't have one. Well, maybe they do but I refuse to even go to their website and look.

I had been looking at getting one for probably a few years now but since I didn't have a great need for one it wasn't something I was in a hurry to get. For the longest time I had weighed whether to get the Canada Goose Crofton Hoody which is the design I wanted and one of Canada Goose's Lodge Down Hoodys. Thing is I really didn't like the matte look. There are others of course and I even looked at what Moncler offered as they do have an appeal as well. However besides the price when it comes to Moncler you just can't tell online anyway what kind of temperature their coats are going to be good for. That in my opinion is one of the things I really like when it comes to Canada Goose. They have a scale and in my experience of already having five of their coats you can count on their temperature scale.

Anyway last week I got serious about it, spent sometime looking and decided to go with the Canada Goose Crofton Hoody not only because of aesthetics' but because that was actually the temperature range I wanted this coat to work in. The big plus was that as with a few other Canada Goose jackets I purchased I was able to find it for a bit less than retail which made it to tempting to pass up. Not something their known for, but if you dig around you can find authentic Canada Goose coats for less from time to time. Of course you want to make sure they are authentic but their website even has a page to plug in a url for authenticity. If you find someone who's discontinuing the Canada Goose line of coats that is but one way.

When I received it I must say I thought there was no way given how light it was that it was going to work. I really had some serious doubts. Anyway this morning it was about 22 degrees out which is at the bottom range of it's temperature rating and I figured would give it a go and take it out on my little 2.5 mile morning walk.

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. It did work rather well and I did stay fairly warm. It maybe a bit premature but I don't think at that temperature it would be the best coat to stand around in but for my intended purposes it does work real well. The cuffs for one are not that tight but with gloves on that helps.

Note: I hadn't been on the Canada Goose website in awhile and I was happy to see they decided to bring back coats with fur on their hoods. They are now part of their heritage line. Anyway I think earlier they decided not to use any fur on their hoods at all, but it appears that didn't last very long. Just like Coke it appears Canada Goose quickly figured out what their brand is all about. For those that don't like fur you have that option now as well. I also imagine since there arte brands still offering fur they had to be losing out.

Sorry not my strong suit but hopefully this one isn't too bad. The website is probably a better one to go with.

Nice Dan, that’s a beauty Lightweight puffer jackets are the best for your stated purpose, and especially travel.

Light enough that they don’t affect carry on weight limits, and compact enough to roll up into their own pocket. I find they provide more than enough warmth as well

I bought the Crofton Jacket black color - black label and immediately returned it. Functional jacket, but shiny like a trash bag. I guess that is the style these days. Not for me! I’ll stick with my The North Face lightweight down puffer jackets.

Thanks Brian,

Yeah, after getting it was such a revelation. I guess I'm just getting slow and showing my age on this one. Anyway it's most certainly appropriate for those things.

I get it, it's not for everybody. For me, I already have enough matte color jackets.

You’re not alone Dan. I bought my first one at age 50, for a trip we were taking. I always see other travelers wearing them, but didn’t really think they suited my style. My wife just went ahead and bought me one, and now I love them.

I also tend to get cold on airplanes, and it’s just perfect to thrown on for that as well. It’s become a travel essential for me now.

Too funny, I just got my first set of EarPods not long ago as well. They work perfect for those walks also.

That is an awesome jacket. I would happily wear that as a layer here in the frozen north.

I love my 2 lightweight ones. The first is an 800 fill from Costco over 15 years ago that is great for 20-35. I bought another lighter 850 from LL Bean this fall that has become my favorite moderate conditions jacket. Despite trying many poly fill jackets, I could never find anything that breathes near as well as a quality down jacket.

Thank you sir.

Yep, for the most part I find most of their coats to look good to me.

Good point, I'll have to wait and see how good this one breathes. Today it was just a matter of staying warm.

Canada Goose has the matte as well. Just take a look at the Lodge Hoody if you need one.

Great jackets. I own two myself. I would suggest one thing. Don't bring it to any dry cleaners as it will void the warranty. CG has authorized dry cleaners.

For puffer jackets I go to Peak Performance. However, I do have a Canada Goose Expedition which gets me through the worst of winter.

I tried that one too. Almost kept it, but it was too puffy for my liking. I guess CG is not for me when it comes to lightweight down puffer jackets.

I''ll have to check again but this is one I believe they say not to dry clean.

I've got an Expedition and I love it. I did size down one size as I don't live in an area where it going to get cold enough that layering will be necessary. It's still has enough room but I can wear it with just a T-Shirt and it works below zero quite nicely.

I know there are a number of people who don't, but I've always liked their coats since getting my first one about eight to ten years ago.

I have a Patagonia down sweater jacket I wear under my patrol jacket while ski patrolling. For brutally cold days, I have a heavyweight down North Face jacket under the red outer jacket. I agree with Jason that down is the best for warmth and breathability.

Personally, I prefer the shiny finish. Too much of my layering gear is drab flat black.

I don't

Canada Goose uses Duck Down. I know name right. Pretty sure as it turns out geese cost more to kill.

Shiny Puffer Coat (Canada Goose)

It's a great coat just don't grill or be around someone smoking while wearing.

800 fill goose down sewn into a Gore Tex shell is my go to. 20F this AM.

Good point. I'm very rarely around smokers anyway thank god. I stopped smoking about 17 years ago myself.
