Hamilton Field Watch would be my choice.

Buy him something inexpensive.
Let him experience the joy of owning a non-luxury mechanical watch -- and appreciate it for what it is -- before moving up the ladder to more expensive pieces. As above, the Hamilton Khaki Field Watch is a good suggestion, and there are many others. |

11 yr old me had an old quartz seiko diver I bought at a flea market if I remember correctly. I beat the hell out of it.
I would not recommend buying anything over $500 for a first watch at any age. Sent from my Apple privacy invasion product |

100% a Seiko. Quality introduction to automatic watches for a decent price point.
Given he's 11 I imagine wrist size/fit will be an issue. Go to a good Seiko dealer who knows watches and carries a decent selection. You'll be able to find the perfect starter watch for him. |

I guess i should clarify better. He's had some basic watches. gave him one of my old Citizens to see how he treated them. I was thinking next step
up from Citizen. Thanks James |

I agree that $3K is a little much for an 11 year old's watch. If you head in that direction, a low end GS or Tudor might be good choices.

Personally $3K is too much for 11 yr. old would not appreciate. I would stick to casio/apple/other smart watches.

My 12 year old son’s watch is this, which I have borrowed a few times. It’s pretty great for around $150.

At his age I was regularly smashing up cheap no-name watches (and some Timexes ). I´d get him one of these:
IMG_2530.jpeg I got mine for less than €100 on Amazon! Virtually indestructible, solar powered, 200m wr etc. It´s a classic. And he´s more likely than not to still have it when he maybe moves on to more expensive watches when he´s older! |

Ignore comments of "too much" for his age. Expensive is relative. You know your situation better than anyone, and don't be swayed by opinions. You're the decision maker.

My lad who’s 11 enjoys his Hodinkee Timex Waterbury and as per a recent poster, what you choose to spent is your personal choice. Of the suggestions made, I think a Tudor BB could be an awesome suggestion. Maybe a 58 ideally on a metal bracelet

Your son is 11, he'll appreciate a TIMEX X PEANUTS more than a Rolex. Time will come when it's age appropriate and he will appreciate your gift.

I’d vote black bay 58 in that price range, or as many have said, seiko.

Maybe an Omega Moonswatch, there are great colors here.
Also, the velcro strap is easy to adjust and suitable for a teenager. And later maybe the original... |

Oris has a whole bunch of very sturdy and cool looking watches in the <3k range. Fun colors and cool designs - something a kid would likely love. An Omega Swatch watch (if you can find one) might work too.
I would also highly recommend letting HIM pick a watch, within parameters of course. |

Congrats on making it to grade 5 !!
If he’s a giant, get him a mens oris, Longines, heuer or Seiko diver. Something solid. If he’s not , maybe a used Tudor mini sub or similar 34-36mm diver. You want him to wear it and not look silly after all. If he fails finals , take it back!!! |
