New Case vs Old Case
I'm thinking about the black SS 2010 sub...
To be honest, I like the size of the old cases - they wear better (I have a GMTIIC and a 14060M). Am I alone on this? |

Have to agree Larry a change for the worst IMHO just cannot see the reasoning calling it a Maxi case for just a millimetre or so.And the old case has been very well tested over the last 40 odd years.IMHO bigger is not always better in this case.

Now I realise that he is mad .. .. but absolutely correct. Nothing wears as well as a 14060 or vintage GMT. Perhaps it's just me getting older.

Old school except for the DSSD and a true supersized case although I can sort of understand the complaint the bracelet is a little small for the head. Not saying I like the DSSD more than the SD, I like them both equally but I am saying if I am going for a big case model it will be the DSSD.

I prefer the original size cases over the obese oversized ones.

I like the smaller ones better, though I don't mind the new ones on the DJ's.

I would take the classic GMT's over the new ceramic with the super case, and I much prefer the classic SD to the SDDS, I guess I am old school also.

I too prefer the old case.
The proportions of the new larger case seem wrong to me.

I'd have to agree I'm partial to the classic models too.

Prefer the old ones. I think the big block cases make the bracelets look very narrow and incongruous

I voted "I don't care"
...and I don't. Some like ceramic bezel inserts, some don't like PCL's, some like TT, some don't like Daytona's, some like NATO straps, some don't like an engraved rehaut... Rolex has several models and combinations. Purchase what appeals to you and try to live with what you like not what everybody else likes. Just a thought

Definitely the Maxi case. Once you wear it, the proportion between the case and bracelet seem perfect. I had both. Once I got the GMTIIC, the older style case lugs looked kind of thin and wimpy. They also made the watch look dated. The maxi case looks stronger, more like a tool watch and normal. Had to sell the old ones...

Well, I went ahead and sold my GMTIIC on TZ tonight. I'm sticking with the older cases for the time-being - my two subs (LV and 14060) and my Daytona. I think it will take me a while to get used to the metal on the new cases, but I'll probably change my mind when the black SS sub comes out next year. :-)

Size matters for me based on style
Interestingly enough, I like the maxi case sport watches, but don't like the look or size of the new Day date II or Datejust II. Too flat looking and too big. The Day Date lost some of it's elegance for me. Also, I LOVE the president bracelet, but I think it looks out of proportion (too small) on the Day Date II. I wonder if they are going to leave both models out there so that they might be able to cancel the newer ones if trends change??

I haven't purchased the newer GMT with the new case, so I can't say, but I am surprised that many prefer the old case. My understanding is that Rolex designed the new case specifically to be more ergonomically comfortable. I have to try out the difference for myself some time. But I have to admit I am surprised by the number of forum participants who prefer the old--maybe I should look into used? Maybe. I don't mind the ceramic bezel, but the comfort level does actually impact me, so I'll obviously need to check into this.

In general, I believe the vast majority of member on TRF are 'old school' Rolex lovers (and I'm not talking age...I'm talking those that think models like the Sub/Daytona are perfect and can't be improved upon...which ironically enough I think is pretty laughable seeing as both of those models have changed significantly over the last 30-50 years!!!)...they love the classic models and usually think Rolex would be better off leaving a tried and true class like the Sub alone when it comes to major change. Heck, just do a search of anything having to do with adding a date to the Daytona and you'll understand what I'm saying (personally I think Rolex would have a home-run on their hands if they offered a Daytona-Date AND Daytona...others tend to disagree in great numbers...I don't get it as I'll never understand why offering more choice is considered a bad thing ). Personally, I think some change (and not too often) is good and helps to keep the brand fresh. I love Omega, but feel they update their lines too often which hurts when you're trying to invent a 'modern classic' watch. Rolex has been slow to change and to the casual observer it's next to impossible to tell a difference of many of the updates (such as the case with these new Supercases, Maxi-dials, better clasps)...yet when you get a bunch of WIS together that don't necessarily like any alterations to a classic, you would think Rolex invented a completely new and different watch that looks nothing like the model it replaced. |

Old all the way. I'm curious to see the new SS SUB in the flesh whenever it may come out though.

... I may change my mind when I strap the potential forthcoming SS sub or GMT 'coke' release to my wrist.
On second thoughts .... £5000+.

I prefer a more refined look from before! I do not like the Supercase really, just seems kind of clunky but no doubt they are nice too.
