Premium for an Explorer II?
I stopped by my AD today. There was a new manager working there, so he obviously did not know I was a returning customer. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. Anyway, I tried on an Explorer II, which, to my knowledge, is one of Rolex's less popular models. Instead of offering me a discount he said I'd have to pay more than MSRP for the watch if I'm paying in cash.
Excuse me, but WTF was that guy smoking? Next thing, he'll charge me a fee just to look at the watch.

Ok, good. I thought I was missing something or maybe I was going crazy.
I'll go back tomorrow (most ADs here are in the same area) and see again. Maybe he was just having a rough day. EDIT: The good part is, another AD offered me 24 months no interest. It's really hard to pass that up.

Matthew, would you consider buying a brand new one from one of our trusted grey dealers here? You could save closer to 30% and not pay tax! Definitely the best way to go!

Well, I don't think that it is one of Rolex "less popular" models......... They sell better than the Yachtmasters, anything TT, and are only rivaled in the Sport line-up by the Sub and GMT...
But, still, there should never be a premium at any AD for one... and especially not if you were paying cash

What discount would you ask for? I'm just trying to get a hint at what is normal for the Explorer II.

Apparently this depends on the area of the country you live in.... Getting any sort of discount on a Stainless Steel model is unusual on the west coast, so "normal" is MSRP on a Rolex....... It doesn't matter what model it is..

Well, since list is $5,925 and GD's sells them for around $4,500 you figure the discount.

Many people on this forum appreciate their A.D.s and rightly so. However, some on this forum will now only buy from a respected grey dealer (due to encounters like this and the difference in savings a grey dealer offers). Either way is fine by me. It's a personal choice. But I have to believe that stories like this push people closer to the grey market. I mean why in the world would a customer pay full price (or a PREMIUM! for an Exp. II?????) and be treated like this. I'm sure it's just ignorance, and every major company has a few ignorant employees, but I always expect more from Rolex. They're selling us fine watches that are associated with an image of excellence. You would expect the peddlers of these timepieces to represent the best of that image. Just My Humble Opinion! P.S. I am not degrading the Explorer II. I really admire that watch, but one is usually offered reasonable discounts on that model. |

Here in the UK it is difficult to get any form of discount from an AD on any of the Rolex sports models - that said I did get over 40% discount (on list price) from my AD when purchasing my pre-owned Explorer II (18 months old) so there are some deals to be had on this particular model if you search around. Great watch.

No way can there ever be a premium of any of the 2 Exp-II models.
They are easy to buy, but very hard to sell. JJ

My Experience from Explorer II's is that you can get them at a good discount. At least I have been able to get mine at a much better price than many other watches. Explorer IIs do not move that fast where I live, but it seems that they are getting more popular every day now...

You should still be able to get one at a some discount. They turn up regularly here on these forums, too.
That said, I know a dealer who is buying up all the Expy II's that he can because he believes very soon that Rolex will update the model. |

Here's an update:
I went back today and the jerk salesperson was nicer. I also found out that he was not even a manager or anyone important. He was just a salesperson with an attitude. Anyway the saleslady that sold me my Sub was there too. She offered me 20% off ($4800 instead of $5925). I payed for it in cash and was about to leave when I checked the serial number. It was a "Z". I told her I am not going to purchase a three-year-old watch. She said fine and that she could order a "V". She called later on and told me that she could only do 10% off on a "V". I think that's an insult because not only was I treated like crap the day before, they tried selling me a three-year-old watch without telling me. Should I take the "V" serial for 10% off or should I just get my money back?

Just done the converstion on this, that is one expensive watch. A new one in the UK today is £3600 less a decent discount.
Would love to here the salesperson's take on the initial converstation. Every story has two sides.

You should pay 4300.00-4500.00 for this watch new right now. I haven't even tried hard, but have seen many dealers on here that would give that price a run. Tell them to stick the watch where the sun doesn't shine.
