3 watches and done, what do you think?

Folks,

Since the arrival of the Polar I am seriously considering trimming down the collection significantly.

The Sub is up for sale and I have a buyer already.
Now I am considering a move with my 16660 as well and ask my AD for a Kermit.

Then I’d have the 124270, 226570, 126610LV and a cheap Seiko to knock around.

Having more watches then 3 + a beater seems redundant for me.

What do you guys think?

Some would say 3 is too many. I say not enough. Do what you feel is best!

3 plus a beater seems to be the sweet spot.

Mine are...

Polar explorer 2
Speedy pro
Black Bay - to be acquired

Beater - pro trek

Then I've got a few sentimental ones I don't really wear.

Two Explorers is likely two much similarity imho (even though significantly different). If you're happy that's all that matters.

For me personally, 3 is perfect. Right now have:

Black Bay 58 - daily wear and for diving, black dial
Zenith Chronomaster Sport - chronograph and white dial
Grand Seiko Skyflake - dress watch

Also have a moonswatch for relax days outside and such, but that's more of a toy than watch.

I try to go three. I move on from some pieces and feel content for a hot minute. Then, as if by magic, a few months later, there's five or six watches back in my case. It's strange.

I currently have 5:

SubC date 40
Yellow Gold / White face DD40
Root beer TT
Kermit MK2
OP39 Rhodium.

There are a few more on my list at the AD. I can easily say I'm done, but if and when I get the call for something on my list, I'd be hard pressed not to take it.

Although I've gone way over budget & count on the "beaters" this trio covers so many scenarios for me. A smaller group of purposeful watches feels right for me as well.

I always like the idea of 3 and a G

In terms of what 3. Smart attire, Travel and a Daily would need to be covered. Personally however I don’t think I could have ‘only’ 3.

3 or maybe 4 is more than enough to rotate and if the need comes to move one or two out to get another in then so be it

I’ve never personally experienced or understood the concept of satiation. I’m not wired that way, this is a very real reason why I had to quit drinking. Watches are harmless and endlessly fascinating and one new acquisition always seems to dovetail into the next. It can be exhausting. I truly envy those who can be sated with three watches. I can’t stop hunting.

For me it is about giving every watch enough wrist time to make it worthwhile to own and that has its limits - others will be happy with a large collection that isn’t worn very often.

The day date/ dial isn’t what I’d personally choose but I like this look - 3 nice watches, all very different.

This is very true, the struggle is real. I have a descending order of rotation and the watches at the bottom get worn the least. Still, when they do get worn they are the perfect watch for the circumstance at hand. At least that’s what I tell myself.

I have 20+, but have 4 that cover pretty much anything and could be all you need for a "normal person"

1. Rolex Submariner Date - iconic diver
2. Omega Speedmaster Professional 3861 - iconic chrono
3. Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso DuoFace - dressy AND GMT function
4. DW-5000SL - Screwback square G-shock - 25th anniversary recreation of the first G-Shock from 1983 - beater and also iconic watch

What do you guys think?

I think that would be a great 3 piece and it’s definitely all you need assuming you have no real use for a dressier watch. Even so, the Ex1 can be dressed up if need be.

I love the idea of a 2-3 piece….and will be doing my best to keep to 3. It’s a struggle though because there are so many nice pieces that I want.

I've always thought 3 is the sweet spot, so I fully support your move. Especially when it comes to Rolexes, something just seems wrong about not giving a Rolex a ton of wrist time and really wearing it.

The 3 you have in mind hits my top 3 3 lists (yes, I like thinking in 3s when it comes to watches). You got Land, Air, Sea (I think with the independent GMT hand the Exp II can fully count as an air/travel type watch). You got dress, everyday, sport (I think these days a 36mm Exp I without a doubt can be used as a dress watch. Sub is a great everyday watch, an Exp II is more of a rough and tumble sport watch).

The other "3" I like is field, diver, and chrono FWIW.

Happy with this 3 + 1… a daily (sub), 2 kind of dressed watches (black and brown leather strap)plus the stealth / vacations / beater ( exp I ).

This being said I am on a waiting list for a root beer GMT, needs to add a little bit of gold in the collection…
