State of the Rolex Market: Copenhagen

Encouraged by recent reports of AD supply loosening up I visited the three Rolex ADs in downtown Copenhagen today.
(That's a total of 15 minutes out of my day FWIW, can't throw a dead cat without hitting an AD there)

[1] "We have nothing but you may join the waiting list. It could be a while..."
[2] "Let me check in the back! Sorry, no BLNR in stock. Would you like pre-owned instead?" (I'm pretty sure this is a well-practiced routine )
[3] "Sorry, no"

So that's that. We're still back in 2017 as far as I can see. Supply is still tight. Will try again in ~1yr.

Things seem to be pretty tough in London still as well. Even 36mm Datejusts are hard to get hold of! Annoying.

Did you only ask for BLNRs?

I think its more of, "we have every watch under the sun in the back but will only sell them to our gray dealer and those with very large purchase history who continue to buy from us".

Rolex incentivized these ADs to sell pre-owned, so good luck getting anything that trades higher than MSRP at retail.

Outside of PM models being offered again I don't feel the UK has changed that much this year

Think most of the recent 'I got the call' posts have been from US based members

My sense of it is there are 2 groups:
1-Happy “I got the call” people.
2-The other 98% disgruntled.

I’ll echo this. Living in CPH myself I’ve taken the same tour with the exact same responses. Asked into availability of a silver dial DJ41 one time and a DD on another

In my area, PM models started to appear in the cases.
DD36 and DD40 (even YG green dial with diamond bezel), WG Sub.

Of course! I know from experience that if I were to ask for a DJ they'd pull one out immediately. Then I'm left with egg on my face since I don't want it anyway.

(Wifey already has four, pretty sure she'd sell one of my motorcycles on FB in my absence if I were to buy another watch for her! )

Dammit Klarlund!

On the other hand, I was in Hamburg this past weekend and they had a nice selection in the cases.

Just visited CPH this weekend, my experience was pretty varied…

1. Bucherer (Illum): I know you just got in but we have no models for sale. Ever. The staff at Bucherer just felt super cold and closed off.

2. Klarlund (Axel Towers): These guys actually let me in on the day they were closed (supposedly) and offered me a Wimbledon DJ36 and a couple of PM submariners and a DD. The last 2 were out of my price range but I was seriously considering the DJ, however I am looking for mint green or blue DJ, so not sure atm.

3 Klarlund (Strøget): Not visited yet, fingers crossed I can get the one I want! Will update the thread.

I feel other than Bucherer, CPH has been more accommodating to not only serving me but having models to buy. The higher taxes do suck but I am visiting from London so I will try to see if I could claim it back!

Thanks for the update.

If budget permits, I still reckon going grey is the better option.

Pleading with ADs for a Veblen mass market luxury good is far more damaging to the ego.

Though I don’t blame the ADs for selling their hottest ticket items through the back door. They are businesses after all. And profit is a business’s raison d’être.

Who’s “pleading”?

So interesting update…

I visited all three ADs before flying home today. I had some interesting results.

1. Bucherer (Illum): I visited again with not much hopes, I got a different sales assistant who was very receptive than yesterday. He told me a few watches were available, mainly some TT DJs but not the one I was hoping for. I was offered pre-owned SS Daytonas; however they were out of my budget.

2. Kharlund (Axel Towers): I had higher hopes here since my positive visit from the day before. However, I had a different sales assistant who was not very forthcoming. He mentioned everything is exhibition only. It was only when I mentioned his colleague yesterday offered me a sub, he started backtracking… Not very happy with this experience.

3 Kharlund (Strøget): I had a pretty good experience here. The sales assistant (Alma I believe the name was) offered a few SS DJs. Unfortunately not the one I was looking for but nearly pulled the trigger!

TLDR: Sales assistants can make or break the experience. I’d still recommend Kharlund since there are two of them!
