New Member- My Impressions of the Forum

Hello!
I have been interested in watches for a little over 2 years since my brother gave me a vintage Seiko 5, and I stayed away from this forum for a while, since I felt like Rolex was so far away from anything I would aspire to/be interested in. I also felt like it must be a haven for snobby behavior. As a result, I have spent a fair amount of time in a different large watch forum (no use naming names, you can probably guess which though.)

Over time, I have noticed more and more extremely toxic behavior on that forum and in other watch media, unlike anything I’ve seen in other hobbies. Shaming for lack of knowledge, berating, unconstructive criticism, and a general lack of empathy or social awareness, so much so that I felt it must be endemic in the hobby..

until I came here, that is. What I’ve seen and experienced is a kind, welcoming, positive atmosphere with people who have nothing to prove, and want others to enjoy the hobby as they do. It’s been really satisfying to see. With the help of some members here, I have gotten a hold of my first watch fit for the forum, a Tudor Prince Oysterdate. I’m enjoying the wealth of information here, and as soon as I get permission to post links to pictures I’ll be inquiring about it here, as it seems to be a somewhat unusual reference.

In short, thanks for being a great place to be :)

First of all, welcome aboard! Secondly, congrats on that Tudor Prince OysterDate. We love some pics around here so it would be great to post some wristshots and lastly, we're all snobby here.

Just kidding! lol Welcome.

The same observations can be made for forums about cars, tech, guitars, sports, etc. There will always be personalities that clash, but I think the moderators here do a good job.

Welcome and congrats on getting the Tudor!

Welcome and congrats on getting the Tudor!
Having been a member or former member of too many forums about watches, drums, finance, etc. and a moderator as well, I have to agree. It’s a tight ship, but the rules are there for a good reason and it all works well more than it doesn’t. I’m surprised I haven’t been banned yet.

Welcome to the forum OP.

Welcome. Just like most places the outliers have a tendency to cast a shadow over many good members. TRF is great but you will run in to the occasional difficult person. That is ok, as it usually sorts itself out.

You don't need permission to attach a .jpg picture to your posts.

Embedding attachments in Rolex Forums posts

Here are instructions for attaching a .jpg image to your post. It must be less than 293 kiloBytes in size, so if it's larger than that you'll have to resize it using one of the free online apps on the net like https://www.resize2mail.com/. Also, you must include some text in the post; a short sentence will do.

1. Click on "Post Reply" at the bottom of the last post in the thread.

2. In the "Additional Options" window, click on "Manage Attachments."

3. In the window that opens, click the top "Choose File" and then enter the file name of the .jpg file on your hard drive you want to embed in your post. Click "Upload." If your file is too large you will be told, and you'll have to reduce the file size below 293 kB.

4. Close that window, click "Preview Post" to preview your post, and if it looks OK click "Submit Reply."

Welcome, and if you manage to post pictures, there's a Seiko sub forum where you can show us your vintage Seiko 5 too.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your watches!
Just to know: When I joined I owned 2 watches; I now have 8. This is a dangerous place to hang out and filled with enablers.
Also, if you’re not tech savvy (like me) the App Tapatalk automatically adjusts pics.

Thanks Stan,
I tried a couple of times but it tells me the images are too big to reduce the file size. I’m personally often disappointed by blurry photos, so I’d prefer to get good quality photos to you if i can

Thanks! I dove in like most people seem to do, buying a lot of cheap stuff that caught many eye to see what I like. By July, I had over 20 but I managed to sell the excess for what what I paid or more, and I consolidated them into a beautiful 1967 Omega Seamaster. The Seamaster really showed me that it’s worth waiting and saving for the good stuff.

I’m ashamed to admit, but at that time, I didn’t know anything about mechanical watches, and when he explained that I need to wear it to keep it running I thought he was telling me it was broken : because of that, I didn’t wear it too much, and he eventually ended back up with it. Before I left the country for work, though, he gave me a brand new SNKK11 that gets the love the old one should have.

I’m looking forward to it
I always shop for deals, and when I told my friends about buying the Tudor and my Omega, they first thing they say back is, “but it was a pretty good investment, right?”
I always say, “Investments are investments. A watch is a toy with resale value.”

Most people I know have hobbies that completely depreciate in value over time (i.e. food, travel, gaming), so they think of something you can resell and receive any money back from as an investment. I guess there’s some comfort in that, but I would be lying if I said that had anything to do with the watches I buy e:

Welcome to the forum. Your Tudor is great. Get those pics rolling.

Also know this, you don’t have to have a box of Pateks to be a real enthusiast.
