Hi,

Looking for some much appreciated guidance. I own a Datejust 1600 (circa 1970) which someone "upgraded" with a yellow gold fluted bezel and gold crown. I am interested in converting this back to its original stainless steel smooth bezel and a SS crown. I'm not sure if this is something I could do myself. The closest I have gotten to something like this is changing the insert on my GMT II.

How would I remove the bezel and how do you get the new one on and actually get it to stay on? Does it snap in or do you need adhesive?

Finally how would I install a new crown?

Did they replace the dial and hands also? How come the hands and dial markers are yellow gold?

I'm curous too Mireyna...good question. It would seem an odd thing to do, and odd to change a vintage that looks great as it is. Yankee, are you sure it's been upgraded?

The case number is stamped 1600 which understand would be a DJ with smooth stainless steel bezel? The serial puts it at 1970. The movement is a 1570 and authentic (and accurate as all get-out!). My assumption was that someone wanted the TT look as it now has an 18K yellow gold fluted bezel and a yellow gold crown. I hadn't thought about the dial and hands. It's a piepan dial and the markers and hands are yellow gold. Am I off base here?

That dial doesn't sound right considering the Ref. is for a SS model.

They used to make a 1600-8 also, the -8 refers to yellow gold, and isn't stamped between the case lugs I think. So what you have is probably all good I think... I don't know much about vintage stuff though, so you might want to ask that question in that sub-forum

I have a 1965 DJ ref. 1600 but am not the original owner. I was told upon purchase that it is original, but this has me puzzled as well. I would be very interested if you could forward what you learn on this particular issue.

It may not be original as when it left the factory, but it is so handsome in that photo, I would forgo originality for good taste

I think that is original but to answer your question:

The DJ bezel is a press fit (unlike the revolving bezels) and IMO it would be best to use the correct bezel remover to make any modifications. Best to use a watchmaker with the correct Rolex tools.
