I wouldn’t say his money is safe buying a modern Daytona 3 times retail.I’m thinking few years down the line things will normalize and people who paid this absurd numbers will hurt either way and take baths for supporting the hype. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

My crystal ball says they'll definitely possibly go upty-down, just as soon as they've finished-started going downty-up.

Discontinued minty 116520 is the one to get……….too many ceramics out there compared and the 520 is a better version with the steel bezel

I envision a future where the new Daytona comes out. It’s 40mm with a 21mm bracelet. New case design. New movement with high beat rate. Slimmer. Lots of dial and bracelet options. It’s popular and they sell tons of them. They can be had more readily available and sell msrp $18k and 2nd hand for $25-$30k.
Then there’s that moment. Where a newer person says, why are the ones from 2015-2022 over twice as expensive as the new one? Nobody can quite answer and the price plummets as everyone realizes this reference was a very trendy moment in time that has passed. The 6500 goes back down to $15-$25k like the 520 will and it’ll just be the older model that’s still pretty good but not vintage hot and not new hotness. It’ll still be collectible, and good, and worth more than msrp. But it’ll crash as far as 2nd hand prices go. With the newest hottest being worth the most over msrp and classic vintage stuff performing really well. And these 6500s are going to suffer the fate of all other slightly obsolete trends and be very uncool for a very long time. Usually it takes about 40 years for a trendy thing to go through the cycles and end up being retro cool again. My spider sense is telling me this is peak 6500. We may even see a tiny increase over the next year. But as others have pointed out 2023 will be their 60th anniversary. Perfect time to introduce a new reference with a new movement to replace the 20+ year old 4130. Everyone is going to want the anniversary year with anniversary colors and the new throwback panda dial. The 6500 will be the JNCO jeans or frosted tips look from the 2015-2022 years that everyone will want to forget. Politics, pandemics etc. Bad pop culture years. 2023 will usher in the new roaring 20s with a new Daytona. That’s what my crystal ball has spoken. So sayeth the ball so it shall be done.

Rolex movements are great. APs aren’t bought for their movements it’s for the design. Different types of products.
Rolex is pretty much the pinnacle of the luxury best movement in mass produced form. Above them you get into hand finishing and design, limited availability. That’s what makes other brands more expensive. It’s not a matter of movements being better. Rolex tends to improve their movements over time just because they have their own standards and want to be the best. Not to try and be better then AP or JLC movements. Rolex tends to update a movement every 20 years or so. Daytona is due for one. And Zenith and other brands are now making high beat rate chronos with all the latest tech and big power reserves. So Rolex is playing catch-up. And Rolex hates ketchup. :p Can’t wear the crown if you’re number 2.

The 4130 movement although been many years, it’s one of the best chronograph movement due to progressive minor tweaks throughout all these years. I can’t remember the name of the parts, but it’s something to do with the technology/wisdom of the gear somewhere in the movement. And these minor improvements are not even announced by Rolex. I believe 4130 will be updated soon but it will not have any drastic changes. Probably just further improvements. |
