1st Patek Philippe purchase dilemma!

An avid vintage Rolex collector, I want to add a PP to my collection and have narrowed the choice down to two watches, unfortunately I can’t afford both! The first for which I’m currently on an AD’s waiting list for, is the soon to be released 5960/1A, the other and it would be stretching my budget to the limit, is the 5170G-001.

Both have their pluses and minuses, the 5960/1A is automatic wind (a convenience), has a day, date and month display (plus) but no seconds sub dial (minus). The 5170G is manual wind (less convenient), no date display (minus), a seconds sub dial (plus) and is of precious metal (a nice extra).

My thoughts are, am I getting more watch for my outlay in the 5960/1A compared with the 5170G or is the movement of the latter the crowning jewel for which I should be appreciating it. Both are chronographs which is what I’m after yet different in their presentation though appealing in equal amounts. I had originally dismissed the 5170G purely on price hence the 5960/1A seemed to fit the bill perfectly (though still a considerable sum!). Though looking at Steelerfan65’s 5170G on the wrist, I’m wondering whether pushing myself a little further might just be worth it !?

Form a WIS standpoint of view 5170g no question.
But my advise is buy what you like.
The 5960 is very special as well, I am liking more and more the 5990 though, gosh I have to get away from the Forum

but I would look for a discontinued 5070 which is IMO one of the best they ever made

I was in love with the 5170 in pix but on the wrist it just didn't move me. Just didn't feel special enough for some reason. I was very surprised as I went to the AD with the full intent of buying one. I left with a 5164 instead that day.

Any way, with that in mind...I'd get the 5960...and have one on order now actually.

Have you tried the 5170 on?

Love the 5960. You can run the chrono (without additional wear) as a sweep seconds. When you want the chrono function just push the bottom pusher to engage the flyback (resets to zero and continues to run).
At the risk of having rocks thrown my direction, the 5170 looks 70 years old and the movement was not made by Patek. Manual wind, chrono (and time), that's it for function. Why (unless you desire precious metal) would you not rather have an automatic annual calendar chrono made by the company whose name is on the dial?

Are you referring to the older 5070 ? I'm referring to the watch Ken has posted a pic of above which I understand to have an inhouse developed movement. I don't like the face on the yellow gold watch with Roman numerals but love the breguet numbered dial of the white gold version.

Actually you are quite wrong the 5170G movement is absolutely 100% made by Patek (Caliber CH 29-535 PS). As for the dial to each his own and to me one of the nicest looking made. Also manual wind watches are usually at the top of most high end company food chains ie Patek, Lange, Vacheron etc.(5270, 5970, 5004, 5204, Lange Double Split, Datograph etc. etc.) fully exposing the beauty of the movement versus hiding it behind a rotor. Of course I own a 5960P as well and would have loved for it also to have a manual wind movement!

Actually, I'm grateful for the correction. When it comes to such valuable examples, my knowledge is shaky at best :(
I just love Pateks so much, I can't stop talking about them even when I'm wrong!

5170g or 5170j look amazing on the wrist. More so than any 5960. IMO the 5170 can be surprisingly casual too. I love it.

I had the opertunity to try the yellow gold version on a year ago and I will not rest until I have one myself.

is it considered by the OP? I do recommend the same, as market prices are quite in the same range.

The 5170 is one of my all time favorite Pateks. It would be a no brainer for me between the two. Great size, beautiful dial, Breguet numerals, and timeless good looks.
